In speaking with a colleague this week - the topic of 'transition' came up - in other words - when a development officer departs from an organization - how does the new development officer manage the recently inherited portfolio? It has been my experience that there are two types of development officers. The 'collector' is driven by building a curated portfolio - the individuals of which have a primary connection to the development officer - not the organization - this type of development officer fails to understand that he/she is simply a conduit to the mission and unique value proposition of the organization they represent - the other type of development officer is 'the evangelist' - understanding that their job is to inculcate, with their prospects, loyalty to the organization - not the individual development officer. It is easy to transition the portfolio of the evangelist - the portfolio of 'the collector' often takes much more leg work to convert.
Excellent point, Jim. All of us working in the sector should be working in the evangelist style.

7moAnd then the collector, in their new role, may reach out to their "personal" connections to advocate for their new organization...
