RMS Titanic, the British ocean liner that sunk over a century ago in the North Atlantic, which has subsequently been immortalised by Hollywood, has started collapsing due to corrosion from salt water and microbes, a recent dive has shown.
During a recent mapping voyage, RMS Titanic Inc, which holds the rights to recover artefacts from the shipwreck, captured footage using the company’s unmanned submersible which showed that significant corrosion had occurred.
The bow railing at the front of the ship, which Rose and Jack famously leant over with their arms held aloft in James Cameron’s blockbuster, has now fallen off completely. Corrosion has been documented by marine biologists for years but was more noticeable in this latest footage.
RMS Titanic Inc are of the belief that, soon, the decks will fully collapse on top of one another, a process that has already partly commenced. Whilst this may open up opportunities for photographs to be taken of previously unseen areas, it could mean that the ship’s relatively well-preserved structure starts to resemble its original state less and less.
The recent dive also caught a glimpse of a bronze statue of the Roman goddess Diana on the seabed, which once took pride of place in the first-class lounge. The statue’s location had previously been unknown, but now there are hopes it may be recovered and brought to the surface as it appears to still be in good condition.
With the corrosion of the famous shipwreck seemingly accelerating, it remains to be seen how much more can be learnt about the liner before it’s damaged beyond recognition.
