Lessons from my Holiday in Japan Number 2 - Simplicity for Efficiency Firstly this is not a paid add for Starbucks but they are important for this lesson. To say the cities, train stations, cafes and restaurants in Japan are busy is an understatement! Tokyo alone has a population of 37 million people 🤯 A lot of the Starbucks and other coffee shops we visited offered only one coffee size. You can get whatever coffee you want but it will only come in one size. They made the decision to simplify the process for efficiency and to serve more customers! How often do we get caught up in doing what we think we should do or doing the same as everyone else. We worry if we don’t do the the same as everyone else we will be less successful. This approach to something as simple as serving coffee disproves that theory. As long as your clear and upfront in what your doing the people you are serving adapt and are just as satisfied. Where are you complicating things because you’re worried about what other people will think about you? What are you making more complicated that results in you being less productive? How could you simplify this area of your life to improve efficiency? #lessonsfromjapan #simple #simplify #efficiency #productivity #japan #whatsimportanttoyou

As the year is coming to an end, it is time to reflect... Last December, my one-year assignment at Domino's Pizza Japan came to an end. It was an incredible year, with many ups and some downs, in which I dived deep into a new culture. Needless to say, doing marketing in Japan is very different compared to Austria and Germany. But thanks to my wonderful team Kairi Koyama, Naoto Furukawa, Miki Kuroki, Rina, Naoki, and my amazing translator Nanako Komatsubara we made it work and launched some of the best campaigns and most delicious pizzas Japan has seen. Together we launched permanent products such as MyDomino's, a pizza style bento box that is not for sharing, and the Big Box, a huge box with two pizzas and four sides. But also LTOs like the ultimate pickle pizza with 600g of pickles, the bloody Halloween pizza with pitch black pizza dough made with bamboo charcoal, a bacon shake to dip your pizza into, a Christmas cooperation with Hilton Tokyo, and many more! However, it wasn't just about creating and advertising new products, but also about strategic campaigns and celebrating milestones like the 1.000th store opening. Now, I have not only moved countries and continents again but also companies, working as Head of Product Innovation Interim for Burger King Scandinavia. Three more countries (Norway, Sweden, Denmark) for me to get to know and a new city to call home (Stockholm) even if it is just till the end of this year. Afterwards, we will see. #qsr #internationalmarketing #leadership #team #food

AMAZING Shokken = Food Ticket Machine in Japan are the perfect Lost in Translation experience 🎟️ Shokken machines were first seen in 1926 at Tokyo Station. There are currently over 43,000 shokken machines in Japan. Shokken are often found in restaurants, cafes, fast-food restaurants and other establishments. A typical shokken machine features buttons where the customer can select an item, a coin slot, where the customer can pay for the item and a printer where the customer can receive their receipt. Upon receiving their receipt, the customer can then exchange their receipt for their purchased item, such as ramen orders. 🗾 Japan's Coffee Shop Scene: A Tale of Global Giant & Local Champions As one of the world's top 5 markets for Starbucks, you might think the Seattle-based chain completely dominates Japan's coffee landscape. While #Starbucks leads with an impressive 1,977 locations, homegrown favorites are giving them a serious run for their money. #Doutor Coffee, with its 1,287 stores, and #Komeda's 1,008 locations (both figures including their subsidiary brands) have carved out strong positions in many Japanese cities. What makes Japan's coffee market particularly fascinating is this dynamic balance between international and local brands, each bringing their own unique take on coffee culture to the table. #Japan #Coffee #StarbucksJapan #DoutorCoffee #Komeda #CoffeeIndustry #JapanBusiness

I’ve always wondered: is Singapore really big enough to attract so many global coffee players? With Blue Bottle Coffee now entering the scene, it seems like the answer is yes. But what do you think is the draw to this little red dot? Is it our diverse consumer base, the growing café culture, or something else entirely? I’d love to hear your thoughts on what makes Singapore such a hotspot for these global brands. #CoffeeCulture #Singapore #GlobalBrands #BlueBottleCoffee #BusinessStrategy #FoodAndBeverage

In brief, what is the difference between Global Company and Multinational Company? A global company has facilities in different countries but operates as a single corporate culture with common processes. Example: - Apple is an example of a global company—the product is essentially the same except for a language change. A multinational has facilities in different countries but each functions as its own entity, adapting locally, with little communication between geographic divisions. Example: - McDonald’s is a multinational—the product changes to suit the market. For example, it serves a shrimp burger in Japan and chicken rice porridge in Malaysia. I will post detailed article on this subject later.

Multinational food culture in Japan Nowadays, there are a lot of people who come to visit, move for their job, or study abroad in Japan from abroad. Japanese foods are extremely popular among people abroad and even in Japan, we could see tourists congregating at Japanese restaurants; sushi, yakitori, yakiniku, izakaya, green tea cafe, and even high-end traditional Japanese meals called “Kaiseki”. But at the same time, we could see multinational restaurants and cafes because Japan is becoming a more diverse country. Also, Japanese people enjoy really good food from different countries. Japan: A Feast for the Senses 🇯🇵🧠🍜 Japan offers a unique cultural experience, and while my trip has come to a successful conclusion, I highly recommend that you consider planning a trip there. Food: A Respectful Culinary Journey 🍣🍱 Japanese cuisine is a work of art! Appreciate the fresh ingredients and dedication of the chefs and farmers. Savor your food while seated or standing in front of the shop you purchased it from. Walking while eating does not honor the farmer who planted and harvested the produce or the chef who prepared your goods. Mastering the Money Maze 💴 Unlike many currencies, coin size doesn't equal value in Japan. Get familiar with the denominations beforehand! Cash is still preferred in many places, but they will happily help you navigate the currency; many helped me. 😊 Customer Service: A Benchmark for Excellence 🙇♀️🙇♂️ Expect polite, attentive service everywhere you go. A heartfelt "Arigato gozaimashita" (thank you very much) is more meaningful than a tip! #Japan #TravelTips #Culture #Foodie #CustomerExperience #Travel

No matter how fantastic a destination is, it will have some drawbacks; everything cannot be perfect! As a tourist who spent 15 days in Japan, here is an account of my best experiences and those below expectations: -Everything in Japan is remarkably streamlined and hi-tech, making life easy. From public transport to automated vending machines that cater to a wide range of needs, including tickets, food, or even washrooms. -The variety of fresh, ready-to-eat food options available at convenience stores is mind-blowing—you'll get packed meals, bento boxes, salads, cut fruits, and desserts. It’s so convenient and saves time; people in a hurry can just grab and eat on the go. -Anime-themed cafes are such an interesting and unique concept. The variety and quality of merchandise at anime theme stores are amazing. On the downside: -Most shops and restaurants shut down very early in Japan. Being used to shopping and dining late in India, sometimes even upto 11 or 12 pm, this was beyond my understanding! -In Tokyo, we couldn’t get a table at restaurants around 8.30 pm after a visit to Tokyo Towers, as most were sold out. -In Kyoto, the Imperial Palace closes at 4 pm sharp; that’s too early for people who start their day late. Although we reached at 3.15, entry was denied to us. We didn't know about these strict schedules; otherwise, would have planned accordingly! The best way to explore any new city is by foot, and that’s what I did in Japan. However, not finding any benches or seats to rest exhausted me. In contrast to other places, this country doesn't have as many benches or resting spots inside malls, shopping arenas, train stations, or streets as we might be used to. The only option was to take a break at cafes or restaurants when needed. Despite these minor setbacks, Japan is one of those extraordinary places that is worth visiting more than once.
