Your application needs to demonstrate not just how your technology works, but how it will create tangible economic value for the UK. The most successful applications include: - detailed market analysis - specific revenue projections - clear commercialisation timelines 🎯 Risk Management Sets Winners Apart One Founder who secured £500K last round shared that their thorough risk analysis made the difference Don't just list potential risks – show how you've thought through each scenario and have concrete mitigation strategies. Excellent points - Lynn Roberts is always worth your time. I think there's something really interesting here about the time you take talking to everyone to get buy-in, do the hard graft of getting a digital thing into service, etc. I *think* I'm right in saying that the more folk you talk to, the more "requirements" you'll get, and the bigger the project will become. Given my experience is that the larger the project, the more likely it'll be over time, budget and ambition - when do you *stop* talking? Have you seen a digital/technology project get swept under the carpet? One that went over time and budget and grew and grew in complexity and scope? Maybe it eventually delivered all or part of what it was supposed to and no-one talks about the pain of getting there. Or maybe it was quietly replaced with a new initiative and never heard of again. I think for most of us, the answer is yes. Tech-gone-wrong is SO expensive. There’s the cost of the technology, the development or configuration, the internal team and consultant/agency time. It seriously adds up. Our sector runs into this issue time and time again, and if we could get better at it, just imagine all the great things we could do with the money we saved. So how do you stop it happening? Here’s what I reckon, but I’d love to hear others’ views: ----*Now updated with a couple of great points from the comments*---- 📌 Map your needs: who are all your audiences, and what do they need from the tech? 🧠 Truly understand the problem: do upfront user research, and plan validation testing throughout (note that user research and testing is not the same as UAT!) 🪜 Don’t commit too much too soon: Work in stages: start with an MVP and expand incrementally 🕸 Use networks: Before you buy tech, speak to similar organisations who use it too - people are wonderfully helpful in the NFP sector so don’t be afraid to ask around. 💸 Don’t overbuy: Watch out for buying too high spec, I’ve heard dozens of instances when orgs have bought top of the range systems when simpler (and cheaper) tools would suffice. 🤔 It neither starts nor ends with tech: "Spend as long thinking about everything besides the tech as the tech itself - I think a lot of it fails because of culture, training/skills, processes and all it takes to adopt and bed in." - Libby Rhodes 🚧 Don't forget your stakeholders: "[Consider] internal barriers to [...] doing things differently, of not addressing all needs up front, messaging to users and the fear associated with that and very importantly how you plan and release budget in chunks." - Stuart Kennaugh If you’re thinking about this stuff too, I’d love to talk to you - get in touch!
