DefCon day 3 recap: I got some really good advice from a dude that's been in the industry longer than I've been alive. "Be honest about your knowledge level, but stop downplaying what you're doing right now." That's really a helluva challenge, because the Midwest mentality (as well as my own, well crafted, artisanal, imposter syndrome) pushes me to downplay what I do. Instead, I switched to being purely factual about my day to day, and it turns out that, damn, I actually do A Lot. When I explained what I do, but then how long I've been doing in (3 years in tech and 6ish months in cyber) a decent number just straight up didn't believe me. And I just think that's neat. spent the morning building a botnet, and if it's anything like real life, it's genuinely scary easy to do. Now, I'm not Red Team or Black/Grey hat, but my "sink or swim" intro into this space was being pulled into an emergency response team during a DDOS against some of our stuff. Seeing it from the other side was eye opening, and drove home the need for Secured software development. the rest of the day was conversations with interesting people and learning more about what I didn't even know existed. And then I got Korean BBQ because I earned it, damnit. Leaving this morning with... not a fire in me. I've never liked that phrasing. Feels too performative for who I am. I will say that this weekend has solidified my love for this part of the tech industry, and I'm leaving with the knowledge that, yes, despite my gaps of knowledge and loads of things that I don't know, and don't know that I don't know, I belong here. And that feeling, and assurance, can't be overstated. So what am I bringing back? Confidence. Not cockiness. DefCon really did drive home just how much I don't know, but that it's Okay to not know. There's no embarrassment in not knowing, as long as you're willing to learn. So that's what I'm gonna do Car will be here in 20 minutes. So long, and thanks for all the fish, DefCon.

Consistently posting on LinkedIn is a challenge and I won't lie about it. I set up a 30-day challenge for myself, but I’ve encountered more setbacks than I ever imagined. From network issues to power outages and other uncontrollable factors, it's been tough. Recently, a protest in my country disrupted the network for several days (I’m still unsure how the two are connected). But don’t worry, I've got you covered. LinkedIn wants to use your data for genAI improvement without your permission. I don't know when they added this, but they said that it's shared one week ago for all users to inform.
