The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) recently secured undertakings from a number of fashion brands, committing them to address allegedly misleading environmental claims. Meanwhile, the Advertising Standards Authority has indicated the tackling of misleading environmental claims to be some of its "most important work” when securing the amendment or withdrawal of advertisements. Later this year, Parliament is expected to enact legislation that will provide the CMA with major new powers for direct enforcement of consumer law, including the power to impose significant fines for misleading environmental claims.
