How a small event helped me understand human behavior and cultural differences: A Key to Building Trust in Offshoring? 🌍 Offshoring —it’s about building bridges between cultures, understanding unique perspectives, and fostering trust. Recently, I experienced this firsthand when a colleague from our Australian accounting firm visited our offshore team in Nepal. ▶ For a week, he stayed with my family, enjoying Nepalese food, culture, and even taking in the breathtaking views of the Annapurna range. To celebrate his visit, I invited the team for a farewell dinner. To my surprise, they not only brought souvenirs but came dressed in traditional cultural attire—a wonderful gesture of warmth and respect. However, what struck me most was a small, yet telling moment at the dinner. When I asked my colleague to cover the cost of the meal as a reciprocal gesture, his response was, “I am happy to pay only for what I consumed.” This replayed in my mind for days. I realized this wasn’t about the money but a reflection of different attitudes toward spending.🔎 In Nepal, it's common for teams to share meals, cover costs collectively, or take turns treating each other. It’s a way of bonding and building community. In Australia, however, such expenses are often viewed as private or subject to Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT), and team activities like dinners are seen differently. This small exchange opened my eyes to how deeply cultural differences can influence business dynamics. (Thanks my colleague 🙂 ). ▶ A month ago, I was asked to submit detailed costs, splitting the business and personal use of these expenses, which came as a surprise and, frankly, felt a bit restrictive. In Australia, there’s a clear requirement to split expenses for private and business use. Only the business portion can be claimed as a deduction or charged to the company’s profit and loss account. In Nepal, we don’t generally have this concept of splitting expenses. As long as there’s documentary evidence and the vehicle or services are under the company’s name, we typically charge the full amount to the profit and loss account. This difference in approach reflects not just compliance rules but also varying cultural perspectives on how business expenses are treated. These small, seemingly insignificant details have a profound impact on how we work together. When offshoring, it’s important to recognize and respect these differences—not just in compliance or operations, but in the simple, everyday behaviors that define us.
