Joining an early-stage company vs. a mature, public tech company: I spoke to a friend this week who was interviewing at an early-stage startup and a public tech company. They shared that the base pay at the startup was about 50% less than the public tech company. To them, the pay was low because all of their work experience is at mature tech companies. I shared that the startup compensation was market for that stage of company. For anyone who has not looked at a startup before, startups generally pay less than larger, established companies. They also generally don't have as strong of benefits packages. The opportunity in joining an early startup is more in the equity, the learning and the ownership in the role and being a key part of building a company. Startup risk = doing a high wire act from one foot off the ground. The reality is you become much more employable because of the time you spend trying to build something new. Startups are the best way to learn fast in a career.

I've been a part of several startups for the past 25 years. I started my startup at 24. The #1 reason a startup fails is when a founder or co-founders are not 100% (24/7) in it, when the team is not 24/7 in it. A startup is not a 9 to 5 job. A startup is not done by part-time employees. A startup is a 24/7 job with a team that has no PLAN B. If you've a plan B and thinking someone else will build your startup, its has already failed.
