Check Your Receipts I’m on record as saying you can’t buy into your own hype. Yes, you must publicly broadcast your accolades, because appearances count, even and sometimes especially if behind the scenes, you’re struggling. Those times are when you celebrate your wins. I don’t mean awards and best of lists; I’ve got enough of those to know: with or without them, I’m still me, and Sorel is still one of the best liqueurs ever made. I mean the stuff no one sees. The legal battles you fought. The times you barely made payroll. What’s it’s like to be a mom, or queer, or an immigrant, or trans, or any shade darker than a paper bag, in a world that’s openly hostile. For those of us who meet at those intersections, existence is an act of defiance. Eff the glamor of your public profile, and give yourself a pat on the back for the fights you won that only you know about. Medals are for public consumption; check your receipts.
