I can definitely see why Comcast is rated in the top 10 companies to work for. After coming from law-enforcement, and having worked at other places in my lifetime, I have never worked for a company that cares so much about its employees and the community we serve. Comcast ranks at the top of the list for places to work for veterans. And I could see why on that also. #IWorkForComcast

The next quarter’s goals. The next title. I think sometimes, we need to pause. Take stock. And recognize what we’ve already achieved. Appreciate where you are right now. It’s likely the place you once dreamed of reaching. That sense of gratitude refuels you more than any quota boost. Stay ambitious. But don’t forget to enjoy the journey. And above all, have fun. In a period of uncertainty, sometimes Social Media is a good reminder of things you have felt or said and honestly just forgot about. I KNOW I am a great employee and that when I commit to a job I commit to learning everything. it drives me crazy to not understand my job. Below is part of that memory. "My friend reminded me all those years with AT&T trained me for this... No one trains you better than them on how to survive... Walked away 12y ago from over 80k a year and never looked back... You don't walk away from that kind of money without learning some good and bad lessons. People have no idea what you used to do unless they ask... They have no idea what you are capable of... I was a rep, an Rd, a rep again, on the tech team, trained, RD again, account executive, reports and technology Manger, rewards and recognition, finally leaving as an operation manager... I "retired" because I could not because I had too. I survived the PacBell, SBC Global and finally AT&T merger. LOL that left some scares! In mobility you were either blue or orange... Or like me both depending on the system!" With each experience I have grown and learned new skills. I have also taken all I have learned from one job into another to excel. So excited to start my next, as of now unknown, journey.

One of our values at Octave is: "Progress is a Process". I wanted to share about how it contributed to the highlight of my week this week. Once per month, I meet with all new employees to discuss our mission, values, and how they manifest in our history, future plans, and near-term priorities. The session is usually an hour but this week, we ran short by 20 minutes. While I prompted the group to ask any question, folks were a little shy, so I asked an icebreaker question: "what organization did you come from and what is one thing that is different in your first few weeks--good or bad?" I am wired to hunt for constructive feedback, but to a person, every new employee spoke glowingly of the positive traits about our company they noticed right away. So many of the traits they cited, Octave was not born with--they had to be built. For instance, one person spoke of the useful tools she had to be an effective recruiter--and I remembered how three years ago, we had nothing. Karen Barnes and her team worked hard to set that up over the last three years. Another spoke of how transparent the leadership team has been--and I was reminded of how four years ago, we had to put in place weekly all hands (David Reed Patricia De La Torre), newsletters (Louise Chu), and publishing our priorities quarterly because we received the opposite feedback. A third spoke of the structure for employees to thrive, and I'm reminded of our entire people team--past & present, and the work they did to support our teams and create this structure. Nothing the employees cited this week will show up in an investor or partner pitch deck. But in life and particularly, in companies that care for patients--"how" you do things matters as much as what you claim to do. I am grateful that every day, Octavians wake up with the humility to accept that we can do our jobs better and the confidence to keep trying.

4th Quarter Comebacks This weekend, my son was watching a YouTube video of the greatest 4th quarter comebacks in NFL history. It got me thinking: the 4th quarter in football is a lot like Q4 in business. Here’s the difference though: In football, when the game’s over, it’s over! You either win or you lose. In business, Q4 isn’t necessarily the end.  It’s also your opportunity to set the tone for next year. This tweet resonated with me last fall and I wanted to post it here as an encouragement to many who may feel that they are 'stuck' in their current opportunity, or they feel like they won't be noticed. https://lnkd.in/emNUa92d My career experience aligns with these post statements: “So when you're stuck, you've gotta find it within yourself to say, 'Ok, this is where I am. And if I'm going to be here, I'm going to be great.' Because if you're great at your job, typically other people and companies find out, so it creates opportunities.” "I'm going to be great", that's the mindset. In the spot you are in, are you going to work hard and excel/stand out? It's important to note that Brady's main change was not in his ability but in his attitude and approach. I know at CH2M, where we had over 400 IT employees, we were constantly looking for people who were going over and above and exceeding expectations. The person that was focused on being great in their current role. Those employees typically stood out and their peers and managers could see it. Lisa Marie Whitehouse, who managed much of our staff, would constantly have to fend off other department leaders who worked to promote and transfer her 'great' employees (Sorry Lisa). I'd stop by her office when I was in Denver and she would always say suspiciously, "Who are you after now Brian?". Be great with your opportunities and commit to improving yourself every day. That may involve going over and above at work or sometimes in your personal time. It may not happen immediately, but often, you will get noticed.
