Last week, J-PAL North America’s Co-Executive Director Vincent Quan presented at the Center for an Urban Future's “What’s Next for Economic Mobility in NYC?” event, focusing on evidence-based programs that can expand economic mobility in the city. Vincent spoke on the complexity of poverty and the need for intersectional approaches to address it. Programs such as sector-focused job training, housing navigators, and summer youth employment are evidence-based approaches that can offer the city of New York opportunities to advance economic mobility. Poor literacy rates in Maryland are a key factor exacerbating the racial wealth gap, particularly impacting Black communities. Limited literacy skills impede access to higher-paying jobs and financial literacy, perpetuating cycles of poverty. Addressing systemic educational disparities and investing in literacy initiatives are vital steps towards closing this gap and fostering economic equity. Let's strive for a future where education empowers all and literacy serves as a gateway to financial independence. #LiteracyMatters #RacialWealthGap #EducationReform

#ThrowBackThursdayDatavizStyle Today we're presenting a London city map that was created to show poverty in various areas, believed to be the first of its kind. The man behind it was Charles Booth, a London steamship company owner who decided to use his resources and influence for the greater good after failed attempts at politics. Between 1886 and 1889, Booth and his team of researchers worked on the "Descriptive Map of London poverty," using qualitative observations to visually represent the living conditions of families and homes in different parts of the city. This map sparked discussions about social reform in Britain and changed perceptions of social surveys. Today, the Booth map remains relevant as it highlights the correlation between urban planning and poverty, a concept still significant in our modern society. Explore "Poverty and Freedom", a compelling book by Matt Warner, to understand connections between socioeconomic challenges and individual liberties, revealing paths to empowerment and change. Uncover three pivotal principles shaping the narrative: 1️⃣ Embrace local empowerment: Communities thrive when solutions stem from within, fostering natural evolutionary processes of change. 2️⃣ Strengthen grassroots initiatives: Equipping local think tanks fosters innovative policies tailored to community needs. 3️⃣ Champion individual agency: Prioritize freedom and autonomy, allowing for natural solution-oriented policy changes that come from empowerment. #PovertyAndFreedom #AgencyOverAid #BookRecommendation

Really important intervention today at the 🇪🇺 Parliament by my colleague Evelien van Roemburg, PhD . ODA can be an important mechanism for transformative change in the majority world if civil society and people most impacted by poverty and inequality are involved in the design of programmes right from the start. Accountability and transparency and system based approaches are other key elements. If the new EU Global Gateway approach is just implemented to serve perceived and narrow EU geopolitical interests it will fail. If it is implemented to primarily foster market penetration in the global south for EU companies, it will not succeed in addressing systematic poverty and vulnerability . We don't need more neocolonial approaches. We need to develop mutually beneficial solutions and move away from 'zero-sum' mindsets. We can only thrive in the 🇪🇺 in a secure and sustainable world, if everyone can thrive in a secure and sustainable world.
"Use your time, use your mandate together with civil society, to scrutinise the Global Gateway’s strategy and implementation, and make sure that its primary goal is to reduce poverty and inequality," said our head of office, Evelien van Roemburg, PhD at the Development Committee in European Parliament. We ask the EU to: ⚖️ Fight poverty and inequality. This includes funding for human development, such as women's rights, schools, health and social safety nets. 🤝 Ensure support and funds to local civil society in partner countries.
