Is User-Generated Content Good or Bad for Brands? Yesterday, during the Lanka Premier League, Kandy team captain Wanindu Hasaranga's advice, "මල්ලී, මොළය කල්පනා කරන්න," to a young player quickly went viral. Fans took this moment and creatively associated it with Raththi, a renowned milk powder brand in Sri Lanka, sharing posts on Facebook pages and communities. Fans may have done this to troll Wanindu Hasaranga. But by reminding them that "නුවණක්කාර අය ගන්නෙම රත්තී" applies here, this clever connection proves that Raththi’s message has effectively stayed in the minds of consumers. It’s a shining example of how user-generated content can reinforce brand messaging and enhance recall without any direct brand involvement. This raises an interesting question - is this kind of user-generated content good or bad for the brand? On one hand, it provides remarkable visibility and reinforces brand recall. On the other hand, the context may not always be controlled by the brand, leading to mixed interpretations. How can brands tap into the potential of user-generated content more effectively?
