The U.S. Department of Commerce released a guiding document on Tuesday for operations of its AI Safety Institute, which ran out of the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The institute was created in November 2023 to support the mandates given to the Department of Commerce under President Joe Biden’s October 2023 executive order. The new Strategic Vision contains three focal goals: advancing the science of AI safety, articulating, demonstrating, and disseminating the practices of AI safety, and supporting institutions and entities coordinating AI safety protocols. Three overarching words — “possible,” “actionable,” and “sustainable” — will also serve as guiding principles in AISI’s ongoing work better to evaluate the societal impact of advanced AI systems. #ai #safety #risk

*** Privacy Symposium 2024 *** The EDPS Secretary General Leonardo Cervera-Navas participates in the panel 'The AI Opening - risks and opportunities' at Privacy Symposium 2024 in Venice. This panel sheds a unique light on the perceived impact of increasing accessibility and adoption of AI technologies, while offering an exploration of the transformative power of AI, its associated risks, and the strategies to address these risks, enabling societies to take advantage of the positive potential of AI. It is crucial that AI development is guided by principles that prioritise human well-being. This is what we call 'digital humanism'. We need to work together to create a future where AI serves humanity, enhances our capabilities and enriches our lives while upholding the principles of fairness, transparency, and accountability. The promise of AI is immense, and by guiding its development wisely, we can ensure that it becomes a powerful force for good in our society. This is precisely what we commit to do at the EDPS in the coming months and years. Let's all join and support this endeavour. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eeQUrW5Z #AIAct #AI

Unsurprisingly, AI hallucination has recently taken centre stage. Blind reliance on fabricated data has severe consequences. It is especially problematic for novices who lack the technical expertise to verify such data. “To what extent is AI hallucination acceptable?” and “How much room for error are we willing to tolerate?” - Arthur D. Thx Tony Moroney - an interesting topic. As others have mentioned, trusting any technology blindly is a mistake. Non-semantic syntactic statistical machines. I think Zapier provides a nice brief explanation (simplified) - "The problem is that the large language models (LLMs) and large multimodal models (LMMs) that underlie any AI text generating tool or chatbot like ChatGPT don't really know anything. They're designed to predict the best string of text that plausibly follows on from your prompt, whatever that happens to be. If they don't know the actual answer, they can just as easily make up a string of nonsense that will fit the bill." 😮 https://lnkd.in/dFraBWdJ

📢 Exciting news! The White House is pushing for the increased use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) by intelligence agencies! 🖥️🏛️ #BreakingNews #ArtificialIntelligence #AI In a recent memo, the White House outlined plans for the US government to harness the power of AI to advance national security while managing potential risks. This directive emphasizes the need to strike a balance between fair competition and open markets, while also protecting privacy, human rights, and US national security. 💪🌍 One key aspect of the memo is the focus on improving the security and diversity of chip supply chains with AI in mind. By gathering information about other countries' operations against the US AI sector, federal agencies can quickly relay this intelligence to AI developers, helping them keep their products safe and secure. 🛡️🔒 The Biden administration recognizes the critical role that AI plays in national security and aims to develop it faster than America's adversaries. To further this goal, a new task force has been formed to address the growing needs of AI infrastructure. This interagency Task Force, led by the National Economic Council, the National Security Council, and the White House Deputy Chief of Staff's office, will coordinate policies to advance data center development operations in line with the nation's economic, national security, and environmental goals. 🌐🔌 The White House is also taking steps to ensure responsible AI development in the US. The new rules released for national security and spy agencies aim to balance the immense promise of AI with the need to protect against its risks. While AI has the potential to transform industries such as military, national security, and intelligence, there are concerns about its misuse. The policy prohibits certain applications that would violate civil rights or automate the deployment of nuclear weapons, while encouraging AI research and improving the security of the nation's computer chip supply chain. 🚫💣 It's great to see the White House prioritizing AI and recognizing its importance in shaping the future of national security. As technology continues to advance, it's crucial that we stay ahead of the curve and ensure that AI is developed and used in ways that comply with international law and protect human rights. 🌍🤝 What are your thoughts on this exciting development? How do you think AI will impact national security in the future? Share your insights below! 👇 #EnthusiasticTechie #AI #ArtificialIntelligence #NationalSecurity #Innovation
