Nicaragua vs. Germany at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) 📌 On 1 March, Nicaragua filed an application against Germany at the ICJ. 📌On 29 February, UN Group Human Rights Expert (GHREN) published its report about grave human rights violations in Nicaragua. 📌Nicaragua aims to distract the world from the accusations it is facing: crimes against humanity, widespread arbitrary detentions and torture, and most importantly, lack of access to justice. Maduro's crackdown on civil society organisations seems to be following a similar path to that of Putin, whose Foreign Agent Law of 2012 gave the Russsian government the power to audit or shut down NGOs receiving funding from overseas: typically US funding. This law - and a further 2015 law imposing even harsher conditions - was used to control or harass a variety of organisations, irrespective of their fundign status. Maduro will probably do the same, based on his regime's current rhetorical attacks on Amnesty International. All of this is aimed at depriving the opposition of resources and tilting the electoral playing field toward the regime for later this year. #venezuela #civilsociety #ngos #amnestyinternational #elections2024 #geopolitics #geopoliticalrisk https://lnkd.in/gE9uaNUp

We urgently need the implementation of a comprehensive law against human trafficking, which focuses mainly on the protection of victims, which does not require reporting as the only way to be formally identified, and which does not allow obvious cases such like this, due to the lack of measures and investigation, going so far as to violate spanish law itself.
Last week, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) ruled that Spain violated Article 4 (prohibition of slavery and forced labour) of the European Convention on Human Rights. The case involved a woman trafficked from Nigeria to Spain for sexual exploitation, who alleged Spanish authorities that the investigation on her case had been inadequate. The Court found that Spain failed to properly investigate her case between 2003 and 2007. With the help of Fundación Solidaridad Amaranta and a UK legal team which was led by barrister Parosha Chandran, the victim now will have access to compensation. This ruling strengthens access to justice for trafficking victims, ensuring states must take proactive and diligent measures to investigate human trafficking. Bangladesh Government to ensure accountability for those responsible for human rights violations The reinstatement of a quota system for civil service allocations sparked initially peaceful student protests in Bangladesh in mid-June 2024. However, these demonstrations were soon followed by violent incidents and severe human rights violations by security forces. It is believed that hundreds were killed, including at least 32 children, and thousands more were injured. Strong evidence suggests that security forces employed unnecessary and disproportionate force in handling the situation, with reports of extrajudicial killings, arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearances, torture, and severe restrictions on freedoms of expression and peaceful assembly. This report, compiled by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, provides a preliminary overview of the key human rights violations and concerns related to the recent events in Bangladesh. It draws on data from multiple open and reliable sources, offering an initial assessment of the human rights issues that emerged during the protests and the state’s response from July until 6 August 2024. Due to significant restrictions on internet access and communication disruptions during this period, the report’s findings are not exhaustive. The report includes several recommendations for the Interim Government, urging accountability for those responsible for human rights violations, in accordance with Bangladesh’s international human rights obligations and the right of victims to effective remedies. It also offers recommendations to the international community aimed at de-escalating tensions, preventing recurrence through security sector and other priority reforms, and ensuring a democratic, peaceful, and inclusive transition in alignment with human rights principles. We are partnering with leading grassroots Pakistani-American organizations, including First Pakistan Global, Democracy and Human Rights Alliance, Community Alliance for Peace and Justice - Pakistan Democracy Campaign, The Coalition to Change U.S. Policy on Pakistan (CUSP), among many others, to support efforts to urge representatives to sign this important letter. This is urgent -- political repression, censorship, and mass detentions are pushing Pakistan towards an increasingly fragile future, with former Prime Minister Imran Khan and thousands of political prisoners still behind bars. Rep. Casar’s letter seeks action by the U.S. to secure the release of these prisoners and hold Pakistan’s regime officials accountable for human rights violations, including by instituting visa bans and asset freezes on key officials, and the letter calls out shadow dictator Asim Munir by name. This is the time for all who see the need for a change in U.S. policy towards Pakistan to make sure their member of Congress hears from you.

#СSF partner organisation CURE - Campaign to Uphold Rights in Europe has called on parliamentarians and Council of Europe representatives to address the troubling conditions for civil society activists and human rights defenders in #Azerbaijan and #Türkiye. In Azerbaijan, Anar Mammadli, Chair of the Election Monitoring and Democracy Studies Centre and a Václav Havel Prize laureate, faces up to eight years in prison amid an intensified crackdown on civil society. The recent joint letter to Parliamentary Assembly Bureau members has had some impact, with the #PACE President due to address Anar's case and the broader climate of repression in Azerbaijan during the session's opening. However, Anar is not the only political prisoner in the country. According to Azerbaijani civil society there are still more than 300 political prisoners in Azerbaijan. Similarly, in Türkiye a philanthropist and human rights defender Osman Kavala has been sentenced to life imprisonment. Despite two #ECtHR rulings in his favor, the Turkish government has not implemented the decisions, raising concerns about Turkey's disregard for human rights. CURE calls for the Council of Europe to take stronger actions against these violations of citizens' rights. 💔 Iran's Escalating Human Rights Crisis: Urgent Action Needed 💔 The recent execution of three women and a teenager in Iran underscores a chilling reality: under the presidency of Mohsen Pezeshkian, the human rights situation has reached an alarming low, with 562 recorded executions in just this short period. This tragic escalation is a stark reminder of the systemic abuses faced by countless individuals, often without fair trials or due process. The international community cannot stand by as these atrocities continue to unfold. The NCRI (National Council of Resistance of Iran) has called for global solidarity to demand accountability and to amplify the voices of the oppressed. The execution of these women and a teenager must not go unnoticed—it is a clear violation of fundamental human rights and international law. 🌍 What Can You Do? ✔️ Advocate for human rights and amplify calls for justice. ✔️ Support international investigations into these grave violations. ✔️ Stand in solidarity with the Iranian people who continue to resist tyranny and demand freedom. Every voice matters in this fight against injustice. Together, we can shine a light on these dark times and demand change. #HumanRights #Iran #Justice #EndExecutions https://lnkd.in/eWg7NfM7

#analysis: Kenya's opulent lawmakers fuel a youth-led movement July 13, 2024 "..Luxury cars, private helicopters, mounds of cash. The lavish lifestyles of Kenya's lawmakers, splalshed across Tiktok and X, added fuel to anger simmering last month among youth, plugged- in population over proposed tax hikes.." https://lnkd.in/dQTfRuA6 #perspective Whereas the Chinese in the economy, create jobs and support Kenya eradicate poverty; the West does the opposite, invest in regulatory capture and elite capture so as to maintain the industry of white saviour industrial complex which benefits corrupt officials and politicians, who serve as agencies of Western corporations and intellelligence apparatus. This is why the West spends on institutions, to ensure officials protect the culture of white supremacy and loyalty to western hegemony, the so called rule based order, and shared values. 23 May 2024 "..Decades of strong security cooperation between the United States and Kenya have played a critical role in East Africa and beyond. This partnership extends to areas including international peacekeeping, peace negotiations, security governance, refugee inclusion, and cooperation in cybersecurity..." https://lnkd.in/dGsTSPRs. Members of parliament ensure the Chinese are blocked from investing in sectors that could lock the West from the lucrative Chinese market. The West stifle Kenya's mining sector, and push agendas to cripple investment in mineral rich semi arid Kenya, which is 80% of Kenya's landmass. The West see Kenya's development as a threat to western interest, thus the meddling in Kenya's democracy, which allows hostile foreign influence operators to insert themselves into Kenya's governance architecture; May 03, 2021 UK Minister For Africa Outlines Support For Media Freedom In Kenya https://lnkd.in/eHbx8pRJ May 11, 2021 UK High Commissioner to Kenya, Jane Marriott, revealed on Tuesday her government was launching the Our PROTECT programme which will target crucial players in the media sector and support their work environment. https://lnkd.in/dmCeVVMc 11 May 2021 "..UK launches PROTECT Programme to support Kenyan media. Journalists urged to keep asking the hard questions, demanding answers and holding officials and others accountable. Journalists face a huge assignment in the next 18 months as the country approaches the referendum and 2022 General Elections. Informing the electorate of both issues and politics is essential.." https://lnkd.in/dEbAWi8P We can clearly see Kenya does not decide who there leaders are, the media capture is total, lack of sovereignty fuels poverty, and places Kenya as a fragile state. The West has injected corruption into all levels of public sector and business community. What has kept Kenya floating is it's people and Chinese support, otherwise the country would have collapsed under the weight of western injected and promotions of Elite Capture under the guise of democracy.
