Where do you go for guidance on what's right or wrong? We all have moments when we seek direction—whether in our personal lives, professional journeys, or navigating social issues. But where do you often turn when faced with these decisions? Some look to mentors, some rely on personal values or faith, while others seek out trusted communities or even the latest research. In today’s world, with so much information at our fingertips, it’s important to have reliable sources that align with your purpose and vision. For me, it’s a blend of research, reflection, and leaning on a network of trusted voices that guide my decisions—especially when advocating for social justice and wellness. So, where do you go for guidance when faced with tough choices? How do you know what’s right for you, your work, and the communities you care about? I’d love to hear your thoughts! 💬 #Leadership #SocialWellness #EthicalGuidance #PersonalGrowth

Another reason to join NASW: https://lnkd.in/gseDFBDd It was my honor and privilege to be able to attend the National Association of Social Workers' national conference in Washington, D.C. this past week, and to present, with Executive Director Christopher McLaughlin and President Julie Schirmer, information about "How to Energize Your Board of Directors: A focus on Advocacy, Collaboration, and Leadership." Together we worked with many kinds of Boards, including an equestrian service provider for mental health, other NASW Boards, and financial boards, to name a few. The dialogue was engaging, and we all learned from each other. Some key takeaways included knowledge about who your board represents, and what they care about as beginning steps toward effectiveness. We utilized information from High Performance Boards, by Didier Cossin, and Successful Community Leadership and Organization, by John E. Tropman, along with other resources, to share information about the Four pillars of high-performance boards: People Information and architecture Structure and processes, and Group dynamics as a gateway to group sessions which benefited each of us in the room. Together, we shared stories of successes, as well as areas for growth. Through this process, I was reminded - yet again- that we are stronger together and fare better when we learn from one another.

One of the things I'd like to see more focus on in Social Justice work is stewardship. To me, stewardship is caring for two things: 1) the development of human relationships within the work, and 2) the spaces (physical, emotional, social, and spiritual) that hold those relationships. I'm offering a two-day training this June for people who are interested in the relational skills for stewardship. You can learn more about that and register at this link: https://lnkd.in/gJhWQDYU Part of what I think we need to steward Social Justice work specifically is an appreciation for the phases of awareness we tend to go through on our SJ journeys. I personally see five phases of SJ awareness (with one pre-phase). I value them all, and I think they're all needed for long-term movement work. You can learn more about the way I see these phases by checking out my latest newsletter: https://lnkd.in/gh2rAnkD You might really disagree with me.
