The Stacey Model: Complexity Analysis for Agile Projects https://lnkd.in/eYeDE9Zn After 4 years, I am finally writing an article about the #Stacey #Model. During this process, I realize how important this model is and should actually be applied more often... The #StaceyModel is a #Framework that helps organizations and #ProjectManagers choose the right #method by analyzing different levels of complexity and uncertainty in projects. This model was developed by Ralph D. Stacey and maps #projects based on two dimensions: the degree of #agreement (how clear and agreed the #requirements are) and the level of certainty (how predictable the solution is). #IT.

The story I want to share is about a challenge I'm facing and continuously working to address: #Project time estimation in #SoftwareDevelopment. This seems as a common issue in the IT industry, but as a #ProjectManager, both underestimating and overestimating can significantly impact my planning. While exploring different ways to improve accuracy, I came across the concept of #StoryPoints in #Agile. Although this approach is not straightforward and considers factors beyond just time, such as the complexity and difficulty of tasks, it offered me a new perspective on project time estimation. I read numerous articles to understand the concept, but if you're looking for a quick overview, I found this page to be very concise. https://lnkd.in/ecGj_zka

Estimating and forecasting project timelines in Agile can be tricky. Point based estimates often miss the mark, creating pressure, unsustainability and unrealistic expectations. So instead of Point based estimations, we can use probabilistic forecasting. Imagine flipping a coin. You wouldn't say "Heads for sure!" Probabilistic forecasting is similar. Instead of a single estimate, you provide a range of possible outcomes for a user story/ feature/ epic etc. Benefits of Probabilistic forecasting: Transparency: Stakeholders understand potential project variations. Adaptability: Teams can adjust plans as needed. Focus on Value: Delivering the most value within constraints, not fixed estimates Which metric to be used? You can use Lead time and cycle time at any level- Epic/ Feature/ user story on the tool that you use ( ADO or JIRA) How do we do that? Analyze historical "lead time" (from To Do to Done) and "cycle time" (active development) data. Use the data and your team's experience to estimate a range for each user story. Communicate these ranges instead of single point estimates. ️ You can also add a layer of Confidence interval on the top of this. In the same coin example, Probabilistic forecasting would consider historical data on coin flips (heads and tails) and say, "Based on past flips, there's a 50% chance it will land on heads, with a 90% confidence level that it will be either heads or tails The whole point of doing any metric or forecasting is to help customer make informed decision. With probabilistic forecasting, Customer can make better informed decision. #acrt #ProbabilisticForecasting

This pertains to any project methodology. If you don't know every area your project touches, either learn ultra fast, make your subject matter experts your best friends (listen much, much more than tell), or don a tiara, frilly tutu and wave a magic wand. If your input is rubbish, you'll need the last option above, along with more cash than you've budgeted for, in order to avoid a tsunami of pain. #waterfall #pmo #projectmanagement #myitpartner #smallbusiness. #businessowner #agile

This is a fantastic article by Adam Naor. I tend to get wrapped up in using tools, and sometimes struggle to describe the features and importance of them. This article elegantly describes the vast upgrade Agile has brought to the project life cycle. https://lnkd.in/g2cZfByV
