I have a question for all in the media industry. How are you advising film/TV graduates in terms of getting work experience and junior roles in the current climate? I’m always a half glass full person and believe commissions will start to take off again, but how do we help the next generation to gain valuable experience now? I am a great believer in the creative industries across different sectors and hate snobbery around TV production. I know brilliant Drama Directors who started in advertising and are now making huge shows for UK broadcasters/US streamers and Producers who worked in completely different sectors before TV. So is it the right thing to suggest marketing and TV agencies as a good place to get valuable junior production experience at the moment? After all branded content could well play a big part in long-form content in the future. 🤔 #content #workexperience #opportunities #jobs #factual #drama #marketing #advertisement

This is not the Editor's job. 😂🤦♂️🙄☠️ If there is a scene with multiple takes, it is THE! PRODUCER'S! JOB! to mark which ones they decide are the good ones! 😂🤷♂️ If you run into a situation with lazy producers, 😂 always take THE LAST VERSION because once they stop filming, they are satisfied. It's literally not your job to Frankenstein sentences when nobody who was on-set told you what was good and what was bad. Besides... If they didn't tell you, how do they know? 🤔 If they leave it up to you, do whatever you want. They obviously aren't watching the footage and doing THEIR JOB, so they won't have any way of knowing which takes you used or discarded. ==== Having said that, that's not how *I* work! 😂 Since I actually know what I'm doing 🧙♂️ I know when the on-air-talent looks and sounds the best, so I always use that. I'll use cutaways to bridge from section to section, but I'm always striving to make the talent look and sound their best. The way you "compare a single line across all takes" is you do this for years and years and develop TALENT! 😂

I don't know why people think there's a career path from Assistant Editor to Editor. 😂 There isn't. They are two different jobs. It's like saying how long do I have to be a dishwasher before I get promoted to waiter or waitress. In order to get a job as an Editor 🧙♀️🧙♂️ you have to *BE* an Editor. The only reason someone would hire an Assistant Editor to edit is because THEY ALREADY KNOW YOU and they're going to give you a chance to blow it for their business. Nobody's going to say well they've been assisting for 6 years, so let me hire them to edit. In my case, I skipped that phase entirely and my first job was AS AN EDITOR 🦸♂️ for music videos that aired on MTV, VH1, etc. Therefore, when I went to other companies and offered to assist them, they looked at my reel and knew that I had completed IMPORTANT programs for IMPORTANT people and they hired me to do the same thing for them. 🤝 ==== If your goal is to move from Assistant Editor to Editor, what you have to do is find things TO EDIT so you can show your work to someone who needs the same service that you've proved you can provide. You have to do BOTH at the same time. Assist and Edit. The only jobs you're going to get from being an Assistant Editor are more Assistant Editor jobs. #Business #VideoEditing #FirstWorldProblems

Don't Miss this Great New Blog from Mark McCluskie, Technical Director, at Bold St Media Can you achieve television-value results with a small videography team? With the demand for corporate video content continuing to increase in an ever-bustling content scene, we’re taking a look at if it’s possible to achieve the same high production values and end result of a typical 15-20 crew on a traditional film/ television production set with a one or two videographer set up typical of commercial video. Having worked for a combined total of over 20000 hours on a professional television production set and then in more recent years producing commercial video content I feel I’m uniquely placed to answer the above. For me the best way to analyse this is to look at why so many people are involved in a television drama and what this structure and approach brings to the production. The people on the set are divided into departments, lets break those departments down and explain some of those roles that sit within them.
