“The stories of migrants like Mueang, Mai and Kaya remind us that exclusion costs more than inclusion. Embracing inclusion is everyone’s duty and right. Only through collective efforts can we realize an inclusive society where migrants and their families have equal access to affordable and equitable health services.” Read more to find out how IOM Thailand and partners enable inclusive #Healthcare for migrants in Thailand. #WorldHealthDay

Yesterday, I was honored to address the media on concerns around equitable healthcare in Kenya. For close to 60 years, the country has relied on the National Health Insurance Fund ( NHIF ) to offer medical insurance to its citizens to access affordable health care. Jointly with FIDA KENYA, the Kenya Legal and Ethical Issues Network on HIV and AIDS (KELIN), delivered a statement around the challenges that have plagued the country following the recent changes from the NHIF to the Social Health Insurance Fund( SHIF) as at 01 October 2024. The two organizations have been at the forefront of championing health related human rights and women’s rights, collectively. These challenges have included inter alia lack of information on the changes in accessing care under the new plans, the absence of a health information system identifying beneficiaries under SHA, refusal of health facilities to offer medical services under SHA, detention of patients over hospital bills, especially for maternity services, inadequate financing for the effective implementation of the social insurance plan necessitating out of pocket payments to access medical services, confusion over points of accessing care for PLHIV, patients distress due to inability to access treatment for chronic illnesses such as dialysis, failure to settle the pending bills that health facilities have with the NHIF and lack of clear protective mechanisms for persons with disabilities, minorities and marginalized groups among others. Universal Health Coverage in Kenya can only be achieved if everyone's right to health , as guaranteed by Article 43 of Kenya 's Constitution 2010, is fully realized without any form of discrimination. This essentially means that no one should be left behind. We therefore call upon the Ministry of Health and the Social Health Authority to ensure that healthcare services and information is affordable, accessible and available in the implementation of the SHIF , and centers the needs of the most marginalized and vulnerable including girls, women, person with disabilities, person living with HIV ,and the indigent populations. See a short clip of our statement here:

ILO Improving social health protection for refugees in Egypt through their inclusion in the Universal Health Insurance (UHI) scheme [28 October 2024] https://lnkd.in/gNBP5vEk or https://lnkd.in/ghquPkzE The ILO policy brief outlines the results of the feasibility study conducted jointly by the ILO and UNHCR, examining the inclusion of refugees in Egypt's Universal Health Insurance System (UHIS). Egypt’s Universal Health Insurance law provides a legal pathway for refugee inclusion; while refugees encounter substantial financial and systemic barriers to access healthcare access, increasing their risk of impoverishment. Integrating refugees into the UHIS aligns with global human rights frameworks and international ILO standards, promoting public health, social cohesion, and economic growth. The brief details policy options derived from two costing scenarios considering the socioeconomic status of this population, to guide their integration into UHI scheme as it scales up nationwide. Study findings highlighted the need to strengthen identification, enrolment, and contribution mechanisms for workers in the informal economy, where many refugees are employed.

Phelophepa - meaning “good, clean, health” in the Sesotho language - is a passenger train that has been transformed into a mobile health facility. Circulating throughout South Africa, the train has provided medical attention to nearly 375,000 people a year - from urban centers to rural villages across the country. What's equally as impressive is the funder of Phelophepa - the Transnet Foundation, the social responsibility arm of Transnet, the state-owned railway company. Recognizing the continued challenges in food security, access to education, slow economic development and healthcare, Transnet has recognized their role as a responsible corporate citizen and has implemented support structures to sustain livelihoods. Aligning their community development agenda with national efforts and the SDGs, Transnet is demonstrating meaningful corporate engagement that serves their customers and broader community. #corporatesocialresponsibility #businessandhumanrights #therighttohealth
