https://lnkd.in/d-BvdJYq Children with autism are often rigid thinkers and lean toward perfectionism. This may make them feel it is essential to always win at every game or to always be top of their class, and that anything less than that means they failed. They may have a hard time grasping that not everyone can win or be right all the time. Competition and perfectionism come into play in all of our lives, but these things can be particularly difficult for individuals on the spectrum. The sense of failure that comes with not performing just as well as your peers can be intense and almost debilitating for some people. We want to help people get to a place where there is such a thing as "Good Enough". Negative Impact of Competition on Autistic Individuals: Competition can be detrimental for many children on the autism spectrum as they may get locked into thought processes, leading to self-esteem issues. Comparisons with peers can be particularly challenging, hindering their ability to engage in activities for their own sake. #everythingneurodiversity #marcia #whatisautism #autism #onthespectrum #neurodiversity #neurodivergent #holidays #autism #autistic #adult #autismawareness #autismo #autisticchild #autismacceptance #autismsupport #neurodiversity #robertbernstein #marciaeckerd #marciaeckerdphd

https://lnkd.in/deCHyv7G Marcia Eckerd emphasizes a personalized evaluation process, one person at a time, acknowledging its potential life-changing impact. Eckerd expresses her broader goal of reaching a larger audience through writing, speaking, and social media. She hopes that by sharing her message, more people will become aware of autism and gain knowledge about it. Overall, the focus is on creating a significant impact through awareness, education, and understanding of autism. For adults, this usually means an in-person visit where the doctor asks questions and evaluates how you respond. They will also consider self-reported symptoms. Many psychologists use the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2), a diagnostic assessment when assessing adults. #everythingneurodiversity #marcia #autism #onthespectrum #neurodiversity #neurodivergent #holidays #autism #autistic #adult #autismawareness #autismo #autisticchild #autismacceptance #autismsupport #neurodiversity #robertbernstein #marciaeckerd #marciaeckerdphd

https://lnkd.in/dBpvY-wv Autism is invisible, an experience and way of processing the world inside of a person. Others don’t know or understand what they don’t see. Autism presents differently in different people, while there are some shared characteristics, co-diagnoses profoundly affect how a person with autism functions. Autism is an invisible disability, this can make it difficult for others to understand why and how a person may behave or react in a certain way. Robert Bernstein and I talk about the impact of this lack of understanding, sometimes even when the autistic person tries to explain. What’s needed is accurate self-awareness and being proud of being their authentic selves. #everythingneurodiversity #marcia #whatisautism #autism #onthespectrum #neurodiversity #neurodivergent #holidays #autism #autistic #adult #autismawareness #autismo #autisticchild #autismacceptance #autismsupport #neurodiversity #robertbernstein #marciaeckerd #marciaeckerdphd

https://lnkd.in/dvQXJUSJ Autism is invisible, an experience and way of processing the world inside of a person. Others don’t know or understand what they don’t see. What’s needed is accurate self-awareness and being proud of being their authentic selves. Autism is often misunderstood because it is an invisible condition, with the internal processes of individuals with autism being hidden from observation. The invisibility of autism leads to challenges in diagnosis, especially for women who may not "look autistic," and for children who may be perceived as misbehaving rather than having a neurological condition. The philosophy of behaviorists in education focuses on observable and measurable aspects, neglecting the importance of understanding the invisible aspects of autism. #everythingneurodiversity #marcia #autism #onthespectrum #neurodiversity #neurodivergent #holidays #autism #autistic #adult #autismawareness #autismo #autisticchild #autismacceptance #autismsupport #neurodiversity #robertbernstein #marciaeckerd #marciaeckerdphd
