Desertification and drought have severe socio-economic and environmental consequences. They affect livelihoods, food security, water resources, biodiversity, and contribute to poverty, migration, and conflicts, particularly in vulnerable regions. #SustainableLandManagement #ClimateAction #RestoreLand

Desertification and Drought Day “United for Land. Our Legacy. Our Future" - 17 June 2024 Land is the foundation of our food systems, with 95% of the world's food produced on agricultural land. However, one third of these lands are currently degraded. This degradation affects 3.2 billion people worldwide, particularly impacting rural communities and smallholder farmers who depend on land for their livelihoods, leading to increased hunger, poverty, unemployment, and forced migration. Climate change further exacerbates these issues, posing significant challenges to sustainable land management and agriculture, and undermining ecosystems' resilience. Protecting and restoring degraded land is essential to ending poverty and hunger, achieving food security, and improving the livelihoods of millions of people, especially in developing countries. https://lnkd.in/dcz5F2V5 https://lnkd.in/ex_KXaP #UnitedForLand #DesertificationandDroughtDay #Nutritech

Aktuelle Publikation von #NetzwerkFluchtforschung Mitglied Benjamin Etzold und Marie Müller‐Koné über „Intersecting (im)mobilities in the context of drought, hunger and conflict – Reflections inspired by research in Kenya“ erschienen in International Migration. Abstract: Recently, people in the Horn of Africa experienced the worst drought in four decades, which seriously impacted their livelihoods, food security and mobilities. Moving beyond a simplistic understanding of ‘climate refugees’, our recent research on pastoral livelihoods and food (in)security amidst climate change-related drought and violent conflicts in Marsabit county, northern Kenya, provides some insights into the multiple, complex and non-linear relations between food security, violence and human (im)mobility. Focussing on four intersecting forms of (im)mobility, namely pastoral mobility, sedentarization, forced displacement and voluntary labour and educational mobility, this commentary illustrates how these (im)mobilities have been shaped by drought and conflict, and why this matters in the context of the ongoing hunger crisis. We argue that a relational, critical and political understanding of (im)mobilities can inform debates about food security under conditions of climate change and violent conflict without falling into the traps of environmental determinism. https://lnkd.in/eDPWC-aw

𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐬 𝐆𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠: 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐮𝐛-𝐒𝐚𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚 Drought isn't just an environmental crisis; it's a human one. The rains have become unreliable guests, sometimes not showing up at all, leaving the land and the people who depend on it to suffer. The crops that were once the backbone of local economies now crumble under the relentless sun. Fields that once held promise are now a stark reminder of how fragile life can be when water is scarce. Farmers who have always fought with grit and determination now find themselves battling against nature in a seemingly unwinnable war. Their strength remains, but the soil beneath their feet offers no refuge. It's not just a question of survival anymore—it's about saving communities from slipping further into poverty. We’ve talked about this before—how the guest of drought overstays its welcome—but now is the time for action. The answers lie in our hands. Let’s bring back the water and with it, the hope that once thrived in these lands. #Africa #DroughtCrisis #SubSaharanAfrica #ClimateAction #SustainableFarming #WaterScarcity #ResilientFarming #AfricaRising

My latest for Mongabay: Drought & climate change force Ethiopia pastoralists to go job hunting I recently traveled to Ethiopia's Somali region to report on how climate change is affecting the lives and livelihoods of pastoralists. And here is one of the stories. A severe drought, worsened by climate change, is driving pastoralists in Ethiopia’s Somali region to abandon traditional herding lifestyles in favor of urban labor, leading to significant shifts in their livelihoods. Many pastoralists are forced to seek alternative livelihoods in farming, construction and trade, which require new skills and adaptation to urban life. Former pastoralists express emotional ties to their traditional way of life and struggle with the demands of new jobs, reflecting the broader impacts of climate change on their identities and futures. A land and agriculture expert says nature-based solutions provide an opportunity to help pastoralists adapt to droughts, while government programs are focused on technical support and helping pastoralists achieve alternative livelihoods. Check out my recent article in the Peace Chronicle (a magazine of the Peace and Justice Studies Association). In summary, I examined how the El-Nino-induced drought had destroyed livelihoods and weakened every traditionally common drought coping strategy, from production-based entitlements to market-based entitlements, leaving many drought-stricken communities vulnerable. Thanks to Michael Chadukiewicz, PhD for encouraging me to write this one. https://lnkd.in/dFathgp9
The El Nino-induced drought is hitting home, and all entitlements are failing!

This poignant image captures two elderly women in the drought-stricken Suuj, Nugal region of Somalia. Living in the midst of an environmental crisis, they face severe food and water shortages, with no reliable health facilities in sight. Their livelihood, primarily dependent on herding goats, sheep, and a few camels, has been devastated; they have lost half of their livestock due to unconditioned diseases, famine, and the harsh impacts of climate change. Despite contributing minimally to global pollution, Somalia bears a disproportionate burden of climate change. This situation starkly highlights the urgent necessity for action to hold accountable those contributing to climate change. #Dookhpress #ClimateChange #SomaliDroughts

Gilgit Baltistan, home to 2.3 million people, faces a multifaceted crisis stemming from climate change, geographical vulnerability, and neglected constitutional rights. The region is prone to glacial lake outburst floods, landslides, and flash floods, damaging infrastructure, agriculture, and healthcare. With 78% of water sources unsafe, residents suffer from waterborne diseases. Food insecurity and poverty afflict 26.7% of the population, exacerbated by limited cultivable land and connectivity issues.
