Salam,
Today, our publication on the experiences and lessons from using digital technology for NCD services during the COVID-19 pandemic in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, is out. This documentation took place amidst the COVID-19 pandemic for the efforts done to harness the technology to bridge the gaps in NCD services resulting from the turmoils of the pandemic. The paper shares experiences from seven countries Iran, Jordan, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, and the United Arab Emirates. It is important to mention that the documentation of those case studies was only possible through active collaboration with focal persons in the countries. Herewith, I would like to express my thanks to all of them.
Now, the part I would like to highlight!
Before the ongoing war in Sudan, the health system in the country was already a fragile one, from the poor infrastructure and an unimaginable turnover of the health workforce, to the unremitting attacks of communicable disease outbreaks and other emergencies. The health system had to face all those issues under longstanding political and economic instability.
However, looking at the digital health experience from Sudan I would like to quote: “Collaborations, public-private partnerships and early involvement of key stakeholders were key to the success of these interventions, including partnerships with the academia, medical associations, and telecommunication service operators”.
Sudan had the longest list of collaborating stakeholders.
This is typical for my country Sudan! That despite all challenges and against all odds, people come together to make things happen and to make things work! People put their hands together to fill in gaps.
This paper is published today, while Sudan has been in a state of war for one year and one day. A time when all those cited collaborating entities are either destroyed or struggling to keep standing. A time when the professionals behind the documented success are either scattered around the globe or displaced inside Sudan.
Besides all the hopes for the war in Sudan to stop, for all the suffering of the people to stop, and for all the Sudanese to have their homeland back,
I hope that we, the Sudanese, do not lose the willingness and the strength to keep our solidarity alive!
In many/most of the occasions, it’s the only thing we have!
Thank you Eiman Hag for orchestrating the experience of Sudan! Kudos!
