I just got my certification in digital marketing, now I need a $5k gig to start with! Do you have that mindset? I think it’s time to call it a quit! When I started my career as a social media manager in 2019, I took out time to take courses, attend programs, and basically study so much just to ensure that I had a good grasp of the role. I studied so much, I thought my knowledge alone would get me the job. I made a couple of applications, but never made it to the next stage of the discuss. Then a mentor spoke to me about the importance of volunteering to build experience and connections. Initially, I didn’t fancy the idea of “using my knowledge to do a free work” for anyone, you know, as a strong, energetic young girl with so much theoretical knowledge, but I decided to give it a try since I wasn’t making any headways with my first approach. I volunteered with different individuals and organizations for about 2 years, where I was able to work in different niches. Before the end of the second year, I was being referred by some of the people I worked with as a volunteer. As a matter of fact, the best paying gigs I’ve ever gotten were through referrals. So if you are still trying to figure out things in your career path, volunteer. There, you are able to grow, learn, make as much mistakes as you can (and you probably won’t really get punished as you’re still learning 😁 oh I made a lot of mistakes when I started😭) The truth is, theoretical knowledge would never be same as having a practical experience of the job. I know you have learnt that skill and you’re waiting to get a gig of $5k already, but I’d encourage you to build your practical knowledge before diving deep in. How was it for you as a newbie in your career path?
Amazing!
