Sports merchandising by top-end global behemoths, typically priced at a few thousands, made them unaffordable to the vast Indian middle class, losing out to the counterfeits and fakes being sold on pavements and outside stadiums for only a few hundreds. Only recently, a number of platforms selling team jerseys, especially of IPL franchises, at an affordable rate have started to catch the fancy of fans. In such a milieu, Adidas India, which has inked a Rs 250-cr deal (media reports) with the BCCI for exclusive rights as kit partner of the national cricket teams, is trying to build a jersey culture. How will Adidas, known for its premium positioning, play out in a market that’s being driven by casualisation? My story

As someone passionate about sports merchandise and Indian cricket, I couldn't be more thrilled about Adidas' plans in the Indian sports merchandise space! This fascinating piece included statements by several industry leaders including Mr. Neelendra Singh, the Managing Director of Adidas India. My key takeaways were - ➡ Adidas is hoping to create a currently missing "jersey culture" in the Indian sports landscape ➡ Until recently, most cricket team shirts were sold for a few thousand rupees, making them unaffordable to many. This forced fans to opt for counterfeits and fakes priced at a few hundred rupees and sold outside stadiums. ➡ Adidas' strategy of selling different versions of the Indian team's ODI World Cup shirts at multiple price points worked wonders, as half a million pieces sold of the ₹999 fan jersey ➡ "The growth of the merchandising culture in India depends on products' functionality, affordability, and most crucially, its accessibility", Mr. Singh. ➡ Adidas' experiment of selling the Indian team jerseys through kiosks and quick commerce platforms reiterated the importance of distribution ➡ "Fans are at the center of the business strategy, not margins", Mr. Singh. ➡ A shift in the Indian consumers' mindset post-covid has led to the evolution of new categories in the sportswear/athleisure market, making the industry an interesting investment opportunity with strong growth prospects ➡ Almost 60% of Adidas' products that are sold in India are made in India, which has helped the company penetrate deeper into Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities and broaden the market ➡ The Indian sports apparel market, valued at $673.34 million in 2022, is expected to reach $1,926.10 million by 2029 at a CAGR of 16.2%.  It's interesting to imagine if we could ever see an exclusive uniform and apparel maker for Indian cricket and the different IPL teams as seen in the NBA and The Hundred. In western countries, being associated with a sports team is a massive part of the country's culture and is often passed on across generations. Team jerseys are viewed not only as ways of expressing that pride and connection, but also as fashion statements and collectibles. Fan megastores at stadiums are a norm and are massive revenue generators for these businesses. While India does have an immensely passionate sports fan base, could every Indian sports stadium have its own megastore to cater to them? WROGN, the popular men’s apparel brand endorsed by cricket superstar Virat Kohli, is facing a steep 29% decline in revenue for FY24, a surprising outcome given Kohli’s immense popularity and influence as a global sports icon. Despite his status, the brand struggled to convert his stardom into sales, highlighting the limitations of celebrity endorsements in driving long-term growth. The drop in revenue from Rs 344.3 crore in FY23 to Rs 243.75 crore in FY24 points to several underlying challenges. While the Indian fashion industry is rapidly evolving, WROGN may not have aligned with shifting consumer preferences. National and international competition, alongside the brand's inability to innovate fast enough, could have contributed to its declining market share. On the expenses side, material costs accounted for 53.6% of the total, stabilizing at Rs 163.91 crore, while employee benefits dropped to Rs 32.26 crore, including Rs 1.96 crore in ESOP expenses. Interest and gains on financial assets provided a modest boost, bringing overall revenue to Rs 264.8 crore in FY24.
