The natural career progression for an AE doesn't have to be Sales Director, or VP of Sales. In fact, this might be the worst step for your career. VP of sales is after all.....just a title no?
For many, realizing the goal of becoming VP of Sales is the "apogee", the summum in achievement that can only come with the respect a long career spent in countless boardrooms can provide.
Day 1, you realize that instead of being responsible for your accomplishments, you now depend on 33(3 teams of 10 with directors) people to work in a well synchronized manner.
What ...your team is only 10 people?? Could you not lead them with the sales director title, or even, the lowly sales manager role?
What makes it that you are a VP? The executive team weekly meeting? The once a quarter board meeting? Yet, you still come down to manage 10 people to achieve their results...
My point is you do not chase a title. You chase the responsibility....whatever its name is.
I worked with a Global Account Manager (yes, a manager - can you believe it?) at Microsoft that was managing the Nestle account. 65 people on his team.
Who do you believe has the largest learning opportunity? The largest revenue opportunity? The closest to be able to run a whole organization? The VP of Sales of 10 people, or the GAM, leading a cross functional team of 65 people?
We, in sales, have our value system "often" tied to the title and not the opportunity to learn, grow and move on the a much bigger role.
What do you want to be when you grow up? Try to answer not with a title, but with a role and responsibility, a type of organization and what the outcome would be for you. You will be surprised at what your next role looks like if you remove the foggy VP lenses....
