I just listened to Lenny Rachitsky's podcast with Kunal Shah on building products for India. As I was listening to it , I realised how so much of it is true for South East Asian markets. 🤨 Kunal talk about how in low trust markets, which is most developing countries, trust is usually concentrated. Hence, the concept of super apps, superstars is more common here.  👉 Users in these markets are way more likely to buy from more reputable brands over trying something completely new. 💸 While it is easy to get to a really high number of MAUs (Monthly Active Users), getting to a high ARPU (Average Revenue per User) is extremely challenging given the per capita income and a plethora of free options. 👉 Blindly copying western business models might just not work in this part of the world. ⌛ The most interesting to me was how users in this part of the world do not think about time the same way as people do in the West. Hence, paying for time is still a foreign concepts for users here. “Many Indian languages do not have a word for efficiency. So then how do you value (and hence pay for it) it if isn’t in your vocabulary!” 👉 While in the West, users are more likely to pay for something that saves them time, it isn’t true for Asia. Here's the full story, In the Season 3 of Shark Tank, there was a pitch of 2 Gujju brothers operating a Food chain across India with 150+ stores - Zoroko. They gave some crazy reply to judges like, "Aapko loor liya hai", "Exact location aap Google karlo". Their background was "SEBI Research Analyst". I said to my friend, "Hum bhi Research Analyst hai, official na sahi!😂". "Hum bhi bana lenge kuch."😏 Then after couple of days, the same guy is giving some aggressive statements on podcasts, and is also coming up with an IPO. And hence the statement on the top, which arouse some questions:- - Does doing research really makes you think (I'll say) unrealistically? - Will Researching about the markets help you to open your own business? - If yes, then upto what extent? Does India have storytellers that can speak to its soul? Does India have platforms where they can do this profitably? Does India have an indigenous storytelling culture? Does India have appetite for more and better and newer stories? Does India have multi-billion dollar, multi-decade shelf life IP generation potential? Does India have time for video and audio and games and comics and everything everywhere all at once? Does India have willingness and ability to adopt AI faster than most others? Does India have willingness and ability to pay for all this circus? Hell yeah. Does India need Netflix for this? Well, not really. Does Netflix need India? Probably. In my latest podcast episode with Dharmesh BA he mentions a cool thought experiment. At the National Institute of Design, Dharmesh's professor told them: "From your Facebook friends list, remove all your school friends, relatives, college friends, work colleagues. After this, if you can get 10 people you're lucky" This exercise profoundly impacted Dharmesh: "You'd never have like a Swiggy delivery executive as a part of your Facebook friend list. You'd never have a farmer in your WhatsApp list... our worldviews are so limited... So research allows you to break away from that and meet other people and gives you an opportunity to learn about their stories." So Dharmesh is a behavioural researcher who writes the popular India Notes newsletter and is the founder of 1990 Research Labs. I came across Dharmesh through leading India-based VC Sajith Pai – who dubbed him as ‘Indus Valley's chief anthropologist’ (though Dharmesh prefers the term ‘ethnographer’). In simpler terms, Dharmesh is an expert on the art and craft of understanding user behavior and motivations, through detailed personal interviews - so that we can design better products and services. Why is this important? I remember an interview from Oct-2019 with Kalyan Krishnamurthy, the CEO of Flipkart, where he stated the importance of this task. His key point: The e-commerce puzzle had been solved for the top-tier users in the country – the top 8 cities. But for the vast middle and bottom tiers, product managers would need to completely reimagine every aspect of the product from the ground up. They can only do that by deeply understanding user behaviour in their context and environment. Dharmesh and his team are among the ones at the forefront of this initiative to understand user behaviour. One unique feature of their work is that they're focused on stories of Bharat and not India. Think a Zomato delivery agent, a small business owner, or the proprietor of a tiny family-owned store. Their clients include leading corporates and non-profits building products and services for these hundreds of millions of aspiring Indians… and Dharmesh and team are doing the critical and under-appreciated task of understanding their world. They do this through in-depth, well-researched, and structured conversations with the users. There’s a lot of science and craft that Dharmesh uses to ensure that the interviewee trusts him and is willing to share the true reasons for their choices. And while we will learn about the craft (interviewing techniques, analysis approaches, and presentation tips), the overarching message for me was – be curious, empathetic, and respectful when interviewing people. It’s a must-listen conversation for anyone keen on conducting detailed user interviews, analysing the responses, and coming up with clear recommendations – for product design, research, employee well-being et al. https://lnkd.in/dqAnparG

Back in 2004, I was working for a world-renowned bank, had an enviable career, and a perfectly mapped-out growth journey. Everyone around me raved about how well I was doing. I had no reason to doubt them... but I had a "keeda” (bug) in me—the “keeda” of starting up. It kept me up at night. It had me rushing home after a long, tiring day to read up as much as I could about entrepreneurship, about Silicon Valley, and the builders and innovators from across the world. It made me dream of working on ventures so impactful that they would put India on the global map. It was the “keeda” I couldn’t ignore—the one that led me to join hands with Naveen, Abhay, Mohit, and Amit to co-found InMobi Advertising and Glance. If you get bitten by a similar “keeda,” I have some good news and some bad news for you: no, you cannot ignore it. But when you tend to it, nothing can keep you from greatness.
