Most of the time requirements are figured out and given to you upfront. ... as a more junior software engineer. And this is generally the case because you're being onboarded and ramped up on the team. The goal is to get you familiarized with things so you can get in the groove of delivering effectively. As you become more senior, there's more and more unknowns. In fact, it's a VERY important skill to be able to try answering a lot of the unknowns and figuring out constraints. You might hear what a given goal or target is, but you'll need to explore and understand what the constraints are for achieving it before blasting out code on your computer. 👇Link to the full video in the comments. Soft skills in software engineering are under rated. It's great that many software engineers are improving their craft. We learn about the latest technical solutions and practice writing code to solve problems. But many of us ignore the more people and human skills that are core to software development. After all, we're working together on teams in most professional settings! Even if you're the only developer you still need to interface with other stakeholders. I encourage you to focus on these to match all of the hard work that goes into your technical expertise. These will pay dividends throughout your career. Great software engineers have one thing in common. It's not that they know a specific technology well but that they can quickly parse new information to solve problems. That's why top tech companies don't care what programming language you interview with. They just want strong generalists at most levels. This changes if you're hired as a specialist, but that's less common. Focus on high-level ideas and patterns that you can take with you wherever you go in your career. This will help you much more than remembering specifics about the technologies you use.

One thing about senior software engineers is that, - If you'll interview them for a language they've never worked on before or have little knowledge then they'll probably fail the interview. - But if you ask them to develop something in that same language in a reasonable time, they'll get it done without compromising the quality. Being a good "Software Engineer" is just a mindset. #software #development #technologies

Just because you have a degree, it does not mean you are a better software engineer. You DO NOT need a degree to be a Software Engineer. I hate that rhetoric. Different people learn in different ways and self taught engineers can often be incredibly passionate and great at adapting. Some of the best engineers I have ever met are self taught. There are 3 things you need to become a great Software Engineer: 1: The willingness to learn... constantly 2: An eye to determine value... in different contexts. 3: The capability to communicate... via spoken and written word. There are more, but nail this list and you will have a pretty good start and will go a long way in your career. Stop gatekeeping our profession and move on from that complex which is telling you people without a degree are not as capable.

Never stop learning: Keeping up with new languages and frameworks is necessary. 3. Debugging dominates: A significant portion of the job involves troubleshooting and fixing bugs. 4. Work-life balance is tricky: Tight deadlines often lead to extended working hours.

Agreed. There are hidden miles between interview skills and job execution: I know I could get it done in just about any skillset within a reasonable time in top quality and performance but not so well in interviews😂. Bootcamps prepare you for such intricate questions that you still might not be able to answer, even after years of solving these questions in practice, I guess. To avoid the whirlpool of endless skills acquisition, I’d say: man know thyself. Sometimes, perhaps most, the basics are the bedrock of great success.
