Living in a digital era brings endless opportunities, but it also invites risks. Cybersecurity isn't just a technical concern — it's a strategic imperative for business leaders. In a recent article I wrote for the @Singapore Institute of Directors Q2 2024 Directors Bulletin, I expounded on the evolving threat landscape that affects all our organisations and possible human-centric measures we can adopt to fortify against cyberthreats and build cyber resilience. From user education to endpoint security and incident response, every layer plays a vital role in reducing risks and deterring attackers. Simple mistakes, like falling for phishing emails or neglecting software updates, can lead to significant breaches. That's why building a culture of cybersecurity awareness across all levels of the organization is essential. Remember, cybersecurity is a team effort — empowering employees to become the first line of defence is key to protecting your business in today's digital landscape. #CybersecurityLeadership #BusinessResilience #CyberRiskManagement #TechLeadership #TheHumanFactor Note - This article first appeared in the Q2 2024 issue of the SID Directors Bulletin published by the Singapore Institute of Directors. https://lnkd.in/e2GidSX4

I’m curious if anyone has insights into the current cyber expertise levels on S&P 500 boards? Have there been any reports published in 2024? This is from last year: A report found that S&P 500 organizations have gaps in their cybersecurity leadership when it comes to risk mitigation. The study found that 57% of companies in the S&P 500 lack specialized experience in non-cyber technology categories. Twelve percent of S&P 500 companies have specialized cybersecurity expertise among their directors, such as a chief information security officer (CISO), former chief executive officer (CEO), or former chief information officer (CIO) of a cyber company on their boards. Seven percent had a current or former CISO on their boards. Link in comments

A recent survey by Trend Micro has uncovered a critical gap in how corporate leadership views cybersecurity. Alarmingly, nearly half of the respondents reported that their leadership does not see cybersecurity as their responsibility. 📊 Key Findings: - Resource Gaps: Security teams are often overstretched and under-staffed. - Leadership Disconnect: 48% of respondents feel their leaders don’t prioritize cybersecurity. - Modern Challenges: Many organizations still rely on traditional IT skills, which fall short against today’s cyber threats. - Widespread Concern: 96% of IT leaders are worried about their attack surface, and 36% lack effective risk mitigation strategies. 🚨 Why This Matters: In an era where cyber threats are escalating, it’s crucial for corporate leaders to take an active role in cybersecurity. This means not only allocating sufficient resources but also fostering a culture where cybersecurity is everyone’s responsibility. Let’s work together to bridge this gap and ensure our organizations are resilient against cyber threats. 🌐 #Cybersecurity #Leadership #CorporateResponsibility #ITSecurity #TrendMicro #BusinessContinuity

As digital technologies evolve and cyber threats become more sophisticated and frequent, the role of leadership in guiding, investing in, and overseeing cybersecurity efforts is paramount. The boards and CxOs must prioritize cybersecurity and cyber resilience to protect their organizations from cyber threats, ensure business continuity, and support digital transformation securely. Leadership is responsible for setting strategic directions, allocating resources, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory standards, managing risk, and fostering a culture of security awareness throughout the organization. Today many boards, particularly in contexts like Sri Lanka, lack the necessary expertise and representation in cybersecurity, leading to potentially uninformed decisions, calling for enhanced education and engagement of boards and CxOs in cybersecurity matters to effectively champion cybersecurity and cyber resilience programmes and balance the need for innovation with strong cybersecurity measures. Be cyber-aware. Be cyber-reailient Stay safe. The significant rise in confidence among organizational leaders, with 73% acknowledging the efficacy of cyber and privacy regulations in 2023—a sharp increase from 39% in 2022—underscores the tangible benefits of stringent cyber policies. This statistic not only reflects improved regulatory frameworks but also highlights a growing recognition of their role in mitigating cyber risks. Organizations can further reduce these risks by implementing multi-factor authentication, conducting regular security audits, and fostering a culture of cyber awareness among employees. These measures, aligned with robust regulatory compliance, are crucial in fortifying defenses against evolving cyber threats. \#Cybersecurity \#statistics \#riskManagement \#USXCyber
