New #mondaymessage (brief as always). I got back late Saturday night from another incredibly well done MediaPost conference (shout out to Seth Oilman and team, amazing job once again). One thing I wanted to share is something that I learned a long while back on maximizing value at these conferences. When you do have the chance/time to connect with a potential client DO NOT SELL. I know this sounds super counterproductive, you pay money to attend with the objective of getting a ROI through the ability to sell through your product or service. That being said your time is so much better spent connecting with the person then selling to the person. Yes, if you do your pitch you could end up closing a deal, but most likely that is where it will start and end. If you work on connecting with a person, getting to know them and understanding more about them, the role they have, challenges they face you gain so much more and can create a working relationship that can last for a long time. You can also gain some lasting friendships, which is the best overall result! I hope everyone has a great week and enjoys this #MM.

Stay interesting, until they are interested. A simple enough maxim. But it is great way to see and practice media relations, especially after a reporter or outlet says no to your pitch(es). How do you stay interesting in practice? - Do not bombard a reporter with emails and calls. - When you do ping them, don't just ping them about you-related news. - No doubt, you get inside info about, follow trends related to, see patterns emerging in your industry. These are the kinds of things reporters love. If you get a no, it doesn't mean "go the fuck away." Keep being interesting, they will eventually be interested. Play the long game.

Several times, I have seen prospective MS/PhD students' comments under a professor's ad for students, and most importantly, the most common phrase is "I am interested." Now, let me tell you this: the essence of posting positions on social media platforms is to increase visibility. It would be much more effective if you searched for the professor's name on Google or even checked their profile for their website URL and then sent an email instead of joining the leagues of "I am interested" in the comment section.

I can tell you the number one problem/issue/challenge for those of you looking for a role at a company in social media. The person and most likely the committee in charge of hiring you have never done it, don't understand it, and think it is beneath their level. So, if you are searching for a role in social media. I will do you a solid. - We will swap some messages about what you want to do and what you don't want to do - via your preferred way of connecting. - I will help you to not sell yourself short - most common problem I see - If you want a 15 minute pep talk - I'll do that too And drumroll, it will cost you nothing. What? That's right, nothing. I'll open this up to 10 people. So, what's the catch. No catch, you will just have to do one simple thing because it will show me your skills. Create an account at Social Media Does Not Have to Suck! https://lnkd.in/gtKYPNBq Then send me a message inside of that platform. Open to 10 people only. Have to create the profile before November 13th. Why? Well, because 10 days is long enough for you to debate taking a free offer.

Q: When it comes to the most popular questions business owners ask me when they join my Facebook group this is a popular one: A: How can I get known through PR?
