Today is International Day of the Girl—a day to reflect on the dreams and challenges faced by girls around the world. The truth is, being born a girl still comes with barriers. Plan International’s latest State of the World’s Girls 2024 - Still We Dream report highlights just how stark these challenges can be. For example, 76% of girls report feeling unsafe walking in their own neighborhoods after dark, and over 70% have experienced harassment online. Despite these realities, girls continue to dream, resist, and push for a better future. At Plan International, we are standing alongside them. This year, through our #UniteForPeace movement, we are focusing on girls affected by conflict—girls who face unimaginable obstacles, yet still hold onto hope. I encourage you to stand with us and show your support. On a personal note and as a mother of a teenage daughter, I often reflect on how much of a difference it makes where you are born. Growing up in a place where a girl can pursue her dreams without the same fears many girls around the world face daily is a sobering reminder that, while we celebrate progress, there is still so much more to be done. At #PlanInternational on this International Day of the Girl, we’re partnering with girls and youth activists around the world under our #UniteForPeace campaign, using the heart icon as a symbol of solidarity for girls growing up in conflict. This International Day of the Girl, we’re standing in solidarity with girls living in conflict around the world. Personally, on this #internationaldayofthegirlchild I want to post some reflections on women/girls descrimination just to show that society still needs to transcend this level and seek to elevate us to a higher place of empowerment and promote our equity. 1. Divorced: She can’t keep a man. 2. Raped: What was she wearing? 3. Childless Marriage: She is barren. 4. Doesn't give birth to a male child: it's all her fault, there's no son in her womb. 5. Rich and Independent: she's a prostitute. 6. A bad child: It's all the mother’s fault because she spoiled her. 7. She wants to play some sports: You're a girl!! It's too difficult for you, that's not your purpose in life. 8. She is single and drives a car: she would drive away all potential suitors. 9. She speaks her mind: She is bossy. 10. Unmarried in her /30s/40s: She is irresponsible. 11. Married: Becomes her husband's property. 12. Cheating spouse: Its her fault, She made him do it. 13. Widowed: She killed her husband to take over his properties. 14. Remarries: She didn’t Mourn her late husband enough. 15. Domestic Abuse: What did the woman do? It is really not easy being a woman/girl in this world. Why I personally hate girl empowerment program? Because there is no need for them. At a family level, girls and boys are both family kids. There is no need for special programs for a baby girl. Just make program for family members. There is no need to have special girls' program at village, ward, district, regional, nation or even international level. Why? Because each nation should make programs that accommodates girls and boys. While boys went to Mazengo High School, Girls went to Msalato Girls. and such are Many examples in our country, which ought to be possible everywhere. Again put program for all citizens. No need to segregate based on gender! Now if a family is mistreating girls or deny them basic rights like school, punish them and then let the girl go to school. Remember while girls were kept home men also were sent to the bushes to tender for cows and goats! TL;DR: No need anywhere for special girls/women programs. Nations should put resources for all citizens and programs for all. Shout out to all who make programs to empower citizens, regadless of their gender!

Meet Dayanna Palmar Uriana, one of the 2024 VIP Lab Fellows researching how power inequalities impact violence. Dayanna's project explores the discrimination faced by Wayuu indigenous women living in Colombia and Venezuela. Discrimination related to issues of identity, education, participation in public and political life, and access to human rights creates a landscape of violence, manifesting as gender-based violence, territorial violence, spiritual violence, and poverty. This research examines the situation of indigenous women within the framework of human rights, women's rights, and the rights of indigenous peoples, centering the collective voice of the Wayuu people in the investigation to transform inequitable power dynamics and generate solutions aligned with the Wayuu women's own vision. #Peacebuilding #Changemakers #Colombia #Venezuela #HumanRights
