Please, please, please stop centre aligning you text. Please stop. IMHO this spread before responsive design was ‘a thing’ and software was trying to fit into a ‘mobile friendly’ layout. It became part of ‘mobile first’. Centre aligned text is less readable. Sometimes severely unreadable. It’s not clever, it’s clunky and sometimes downright ugly. #Accessibility #A11y #UI #DesignSystems #ContentStrategy #UX

Here's an easy accessibility tip. A lot of people including accessibility professionals don't think about this. This one change makes a big difference in readability. [Start video transcript] Howdy, Meryl here with an accessibility tip. This one change makes a big difference. Even a11y (short for accessibility) pros don’t do this. Use left alignment instead of center. It greatly improves readability. The starting point of each line is easier to find and scan. [End transcript] When the starting point of each line changes, the eyes work harder to find the next line. It disrupts the scanning process. This applies to everything: Headings, bulleted lists (yes, I've seen centered bulleted lists), and images with text. Of course, there are always exceptions. I always say there are no absolutes in disability inclusion and accessibility. The image shows the entire transcript. The left side shows the centered-aligned text. The right side shows the left-aligned text. Thank you for being an accessibility ally. Which one do you prefer? 6moThere’s one exception to that principle that I use. If there is a single line main heading, I often centre, bold and increase size to add to things I do to provide a clear visual marker between sections. Are there negatives I haven’t thought about?
