I’m back from holiday 🌴 and there’s SGE news! Perhaps 3 days behind the curve, but Google is launching ‘SGE’ after all, except now it’s AI Overviews. What does this mean? Well by the end of the year, for many countries the search results are going to look very different. Google will use its Gemini tech to answer user questions before most brands get a look in. Some things we know: - It won’t be across all searches, but Google won’t be sharing the % of searches AI Overviews appears for - It’s not about pushing Ads (for now), so this content is technically organic, but really a new form of AI organic content - Website traffic will undoubtedly be impacted both organically and across paid (search query dependent). - SERPs will continue to change as Google collects SO MUCH DATA. My recommendation at this point? Invest in content that can influence Google’s AI content (informational, FAQs, rich content), focus on optimising for more channels (*cough* social search *cough*), finalise your core keywords (if you haven't already) across varied search types/queries and start monitoring key stats now. At the end of May, Google made the memorable choice to release AI Overviews at a greater scale. Previously, those who were on the Generative Search Experience beta program were among the only searchers who had seen and interacted with these results. Now, as a searcher, I think people have had a varying array of opinions about the quality of the AI-generated results, and whether or not Google is actually offering a better user experience with these results. HOWEVER, in the SEO community, the feeling has been reasonably universal: 🚫AI Overviews are bad for SEO🚫 Why? Because they're answering the question without having people leave the Google Ecosystem, and they're doing it by READING YOUR CONTENT. They are not ordering your content with other expert answers within their Search Engine Results Pages -- they're just taking your answer and using it as their own.
