APL's core competencies in automotive drive systems have created a unique test environment for mapping the entire "vehicle-in-the-loop" driving system. The focus is on the simulation of longitudinal and lateral dynamics in the vehicle using virtual route profiles by CarMaker. In combination with the integrated driving robotics and the in-house Torque Wheel Dynamometer (TWDM), ADAS functions can be tested including the drive, steering and braking system. 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗧𝗼 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 & 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗖𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: ✔ This test method increases the maturity level of the sensor-controlled ADAS functions and reduces the subsequent time-consuming and cost-intensive test drives. ✔ Thanks to the unlimited reproducibility of the individual use cases, the ADAS and AD functions can be tested around the clock, 365/24/7. ✔ This results in a significant increase in efficiency in the development environment. I disagree that #simulation testing is more valuable or just as valuable as #realworldtesting. I think it's a great resource to use but realistically it just looks better to stakeholders and investors to say in a meeting, "We have hit a milestone of 10 million autonomous miles" even if only 1 million of those miles were tested on real roads and the rest was virtual. As mentioned in this post, these virtual tests help to minimize costs and time. Especially in our current market, those are two commodities we do not have a great deal of, but as someone who did autonomous testing in real-world environments, no matter how many simulations were run, no matter how many miles were accrued, I always faced situations that were not always anticipated - and that's okay! Because we have to realize that operators, or safety drivers, are there to ensure the public and product, are safe at all times. Seeing the industry constantly cut these roles and forcing their products to function fully in autonomous mode without operators seems reckless. Software and hardware changes, environments and mapping operations differ, and construction and unpredictable objects/people matter. I am not criticizing Volvo by any means. I have just seen too many incidents. What is most important is the last statement made - "We also compare our simulation results to our real-world results to support our conclusions which ensures reliability." Always validate your data.
