Should institutions be changed to be fit with an #AI era? A new project, orchestrated by Stanford University calls for a rethinking of society’s institutional arrangements. As the editors of the 12 essays (Erik Brynjolfsson and Condoleezza Rice) announce: “A powerful new technology, artificial intelligence explodes onto the scene and threatens to transform, for better or worse, all legacy social institutions.” The interest of the Stanford project is that it's not so much prescriptive but offers various perspectives on the A.I. threats to democracy and technology’s potential to revitalize democratic decision-making. Lawrence Lessig, Harvard Law Professor and activist, contributed to The Digitalist Papers, a series of twelve essays outlining the potential future of AI.  Sponsored by Stanford University and the Project Liberty Institute, he outlines why America’s democratic systems are facing greater vulnerability.  In his essay, Lessig reflects on the potential negative consequences of generative AI tools and also expresses optimism that “AI has enormous potential to improve representative democracy.” He goes on to say “[Tools like] Pol.is and CrowdSmart.ai…identify common understandings among large and diverse publics, more effectively or meaningfully than public opinion polls. Representatives could well deploy such agents to understand their public better.” Common Good AI was established for this purpose; our vision is to use digital tools to foster deliberative democracy and promote greater citizen participation. #Concern : The global approach to understand use of #emergingdigitaltechnologies in #governance is evolving from a purely technological perspective to one that integrates technology, society, and governance, known as the Science and Technology Studies (#STS) approach. In early 2024, the National Academy of Sciences, the Annenberg Public Policy Center of the University of Pennsylvania, and the Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands organized an interdisciplinary panel to examine the socio-technical governance challenges associated especially with AI. Their findings were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.In India, the policy landscape till date suffers from the #DunningKruger effect and a prevalence of everyone posing as an experts, resulting in ineffective policy academia development. Unfortunately, these evolving perspectives are often only acknowledged by us when articulated by #IvyLeague institutions.
