On Thursday, French President Emmanuel Macron addressed a Sports & Sustainable Development Summit #Sport4SD with more than 50 world leaders ahead of the #Paris2024 #Olympic games. While discussing the need to develop more infrastructure for large-scale sporting events in Africa, Latin America, and Asia Pacific, Macron cited Rwanda’s dictator, Paul Kagame, as an example of someone who has “extraordinarily” accomplished such a feat. Macron alluded to his experience attending the finals of the NBA’s #theBAL league in Kigali alongside Kagame. A new ESPN investigation published today details “How the NBA got into business with [Rwanda]’s dictator.” Since the French president's remarks, Rwanda’s pro-regime media apparatus has started trumpeting Macron’s praise of Kagame as fuel for official propaganda and the sycophantic cult of the dictator’s personality. Macron’s praise of #Rwanda’s dictator comes a week after his government welcomed the deployment of security forces from Qatar’s dictatorship in Paris to support the French police in providing security for the Olympics. Before Macron spoke at the #Sport4SD, IOC President Thomas Bach extolled the positive universal values of sports and the Olympics. In the audience, however, were leaders of authoritarian regimes trampling on those same values. While HRF supports the noble ideals of sports for sustainable development #Sport4SD, it is alarmed by the political exploitation of sports and the Olympics by dictatorships such as Rwanda or Qatar to soften their image and normalize their authoritarianism in pop culture. https://buff.ly/3Sp75uY

How disappointing is to see that only one woman is running for the presidency of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Despite the significant strides sports have made in promoting gender equality and encouraging more women to take on leadership roles, this lack of female representation in such a pivotal position is disheartening. Sports should be a driving force for change, offering a platform that reflects the diversity and inclusiveness we strive for in society. Seeing more women in leadership is not just about representation; it’s about inspiring future generations and shaping a more equitable future. The efforts we have seen across sports to foster women’s leadership must be reflected in the highest offices, especially in an organization as influential as the IOC. It’s crucial that we continue to push for more opportunities and support for women in these roles, so that the progress we’ve made is not just symbolic, but deeply rooted in the leadership of global sport. #WomenInLeadership #GenderEqualityInSports #IOC #SportsForChange #EmpowerWomen #BreakTheGlassCeiling

🎯 Did the EU Just Quietly Dominate the Olympics? Over the last few weeks, there’s been a lot of buzz about the tight race between the USA and China at the Paris Olympics. With both nations securing 40 gold medals each, the spotlight has been on their neck-and-neck competition. But what if I told you the real winner isn’t even in the conversation? 📊 Here’s the surprising truth: The European Union, if viewed as a single entity, didn’t just win—they dominated. With 111 gold medals and a total of 367 medals, the EU left the USA and China far behind. These numbers are staggering, almost triple the golds and more than double the total medals compared to these superpowers combined. 🤔 So what does this mean? Beyond the Olympic podium, the EU excels in other key areas—cultural, educational, social. Yet, the prevailing narrative often paints a picture of decline and pessimism. ✅ Here’s the takeaway: With the election cycles behind us, now is the time to challenge these narratives. Let’s start believing in Europe’s potential. When we do, the results speak for themselves. 🇪🇺💪 #EUExcellence #OlympicDominance #BelieveInEurope #GlobalLeadership

Another couple of words from my side on how Georgian football takes its role in ongoing turbulencies in the country. Georgian national team competing on the Euro24 for the first time in its history is among the top national icons for Georgians. While the Georgian Football Federation is run by the iconic Georgian footballer, Levan Kobiashvili, he as a GD MP is also among the voters for the controversial Russian Law. This puzzle is confusing for both insiders as well as the international observers. But this report tries to explain the case and it's really interesting to watch. --- #georgianfootball #russianlaw #footballendpolitics #georgianpolitics #euro24 #georgiaonEuro

Europe can be proud: 2.5x the medals as the USA and China. (Even excluding UK) And its impressive results are not surprising. Europe is a place where poverty rates are lowest in the world and access to healthy food highest, where health(care) and healthy living is of a much higher priority and much more regulation in place to protect its citizens from unhealthy influences. —> the results are clearly visible.
🇪🇺 What if the EU competed as a team at the Olympics? 🏆 Here's how the medal table would look in Paris! As expected, China and the US dominated the top of the leaderboard. Their delegations are undeniably strong, but their huge size makes it difficult to compare with smaller nations. But with its population of 440M, the EU could compare, and it would win far ahead! (even without the impressive Team GB… #Brexit 🥲) That's how strong Europe can be when it is united… to remember beyond the context of the Olympics! 🤗 European chauvinism aside — congrats to all the medalist, from the big and small countries! 👏🏽

Perfect time to reflect on what the European Sport Model is all about⬇️ The European Sport Model represents a framework that highlights the distinctive characteristics and principles shaping sports governance in Europe. It serves as a foundational guide for governing sports across the continent, fostering cooperation among national federations and aligning with wider European objectives. Its core principles include solidarity, inclusivity, good governance, fairness, integrity, and sustainability. The model operates in close collaboration with Lex Sportiva, sharing many of the same values and goals, and formalizes its commitments through partnerships with key sports organizations like UEFA. In essence, it acts as an overarching structure that unites and promotes positive values while standing against harmful practices in sport. Nice political initiative ✨
