Carvana's stock surged over 30% in after-hours trading following its forecast of higher-than-expected retail sales and core profit for the current quarter. This increase comes amidst consumer trends favoring used cars over new ones due to high interest rates. With a short interest of 27% and a 65% rise in shares this year, Carvana's market capitalization is expected to increase by about $5 billion. The company's first-quarter revenue of $3.06 billion surpassed analysts' estimates, and its adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization of $235 million exceeded expectations. Analysts remain optimistic about Carvana's performance, contrasting it with rival CarMax, which recently reported below-par results. #marketfacts #stockmarket #carvana #bullish #stocks #trading #sales #profit #marketinsights #automobile #news

This section of Jeremy Horowitz' 's newsletter about the annihilation of Allbirds stock ( -99% from IPO) makes me think of Royal Enfield's turnaround. RE was the Harley Davidson of India, but by 2000 the company sold only 2000 units a month (1/3rd of installed capacity). Like Allbirds now, it was inching towards a shutdown. But it survived, thrived and sold around 912,000 units in 2023. The thing is, it's a fraction of 15.86 million units that were sold in India in 2023. But RE is considered a success story because unlike Allbirds who tried to appeal to a wider demographic, they largely concentrated on the 350cc- 750cc mid sized segment and now own 95% of it. RE would have been unable to, and still can't compete with the players in the entry and commuter segments (76cc- 150cc). But they stuck to the premium segment, the customer and the market that they know best and the market rewarded them for it. DTC brands who gorged on cheap VC cash during the ZIRP era and grew like weeds will need to now trim their ambitions if they want to survive, let alone thrive. Many, like Allbirds, are probably ngmi.
