On October 14th last year the Financial Times Michael Peel wrote an excellent article ‘Rules of war: International Law and the Israeli Hama conflict’. It’s worth reading again in context of todays heart wrenching FT front page picture story. It’s clear that the rules of war, derived from international treaties, humanitarian and customary laws, such as the 1949 Geneva Conventions, have gone out of the window. Peel’s article said that although ‘[a] country has the right to defend itself if it comes under armed attack, according to the UN charter and customary international law… a fundamental principle is that even if one party in the conflict has committed crimes, it does not justify the other to do the same in retaliation. Whatever the provocation, a combatant must comply with the laws of war’. Peel goes on to report: ‘A warring party is forbidden from deliberately harming non-combatants or launching attacks that do not discriminate between military and civilian targets. From reading what Peel wrote on the 14th Oct 2023 and today’s article, it is clear that the UK, US Governments must stop supporting and supplying arms to Israel, in exactly the same way that they will not supply arms to any other ‘bad actor’ that so wantonly breaks the internationally agreed rules of war.
