The engine could kick back, causing sudden reverse rotation, which could cause the crank to unexpectedly jerk and potentially injure the operator. Cord-wound starters also had an overrun mechanism, but the engine could kick back and pull the crank with it. To prevent backfiring, care had to be taken to retard the spark, as advanced spark settings could cause the engine to kick back and pull the crank with it. Hand cranking became more physically demanding as larger engines with higher compression ratios made it more physically demanding. The first electric starter was installed on an Arnold in 1896 by electrical engineer H. J. Dowsing. In 1903, Clyde J. Coleman invented and patented the first electric starter in America, while Charles F. Kettering and Henry M. Leland of Dayton Engineering Laboratories Company (DELCO) invented and filed U.S. patent 1,150,523 for an electric starter in America. One aspect of the invention lay in the realization that a relatively small motor, driven with higher voltage and current than feasible for continuous operation, could deliver enough power to crank the engine for starting. Starters were first installed on Cadillac Model Thirty in 1912 and later adopted by Lanchester. These starters also worked as generators once the engine was running, a concept now being revived in hybrid vehicles.
