Epic Games Proposes Google App Store Reforms After Antitrust Win: Epic Games, the maker of the popular "Fortnite" video game, has urged a U.S. judge to compel Google to open up its Play Store to more competition following a jury verdict that found the tech giant had abused its power over Android app distribution. In a court filing on Thursday [PDF], Epic proposed requiring Google to allow the distribution of competing third-party app stores on its platform for six years and limiting its ability to restrict preloading of competing app stores on devices. The move follows a December antitrust trial in which a jury found Google guilty of impeding developers' ability to distribute apps outside the Play Store and maintaining an overly tight grip on in-app transaction payments. Google vs Epic Games: what you need to know 🥊 Epic Games, creator of the famed Fortnite game, is on the hunt and have been making moves big enough to shake the global market. 🌎 In recent years, Epic Games has challenged Google and Apple’s control of mobile app distribution by offering less-expensive in-game purchases of Fortnite, violating app store rules and sparking lawsuits. 🦹♂️ Losing against Apple in a similar lawsuit, Epic Games is now prevailing over Google. ♟️ 📖 The lawsuit: Epic Games first filed an antitrust lawsuit against Google in 2020, which has now reached a ruling that stands to alter the industry as we know it. 🔨 The company has accused Google of anti-competitive practices and paying hardware companies and Android phone makers to not develop competing app stores. 📱 ☝️ The ruling: For 3 years, Google will not be able to: ✖️ Pay companies to launch apps exclusively or first on Google Play ✖️ Pay companies so they don’t compete with Google Play ✖️ Pay companies to preinstall Google Play on new devices ✖️ Require app makers to use Google Play Billing, or prohibit app makers from telling their users about cheaper online goods on their website And Google will have to: ✔️ Permit competing Android app stores to access Google Play’s catalog of apps ✔️ Carry third-party Android app stores on its Google Play app store 🌳 The future: The ruling paves the way for developers to get a bigger share of the market while also keeping more revenue by bypassing Google’s rules and fees. 💰 The clash between the two companies is opening the floodgates to a major shift away from walled gardens and towards the open internet. 🧱 Opening up the market for alternatives to the big app stores, the ruling represents the start of a new age in digital advertising, in which brands have greater optionality in their advertising strategies. 🚀 —------- Like this content? 👍 Like ♻️ Share 💬 Comment 💡 Follow GrowinTech to meet exciting companies and learn about mobile gaming and advertising.

Google Defends App Store, Fighting Epic Games' Bid For Major Reforms: Google has asked a U.S. judge not to impose sweeping changes to the Alphabet unit's app store Play that were proposed by "Fortnite" maker Epic Games in the companies' closely-watched antitrust fight. From a report: Google made its filing late on Thursday in San Francisco federal court, where Epic last year persuaded a jury that the tech giant unlawfully stifled competition with its controls over apps downloads on Android devices and payments to developers for in-app transactions. Epic's proposal "would make it nearly impossible for Google to compete," Google's filing said. The gaming company in March asked U.S. District Judge James Donato in San Francisco to force Google to make it easier for users to download apps from other sources and to allow developers more flexibility in offering and charging for purchases. The Cary, North Carolina-based company also said it should be allowed to bring its Epic Games Store to Android "without delays and barriers." Google agreed in December to pay $700 million to resolve the states' case and, among other reforms, will allow more alternative billing options for in-app purchases. Today we launched the Epic Games Store on iOS in Europe thanks to the Digital Markets Act and on Android globally. The return of Fortnite to mobile and the new launch of Fall Guys mobile + awesome in game incentives are designed to motivate players through an awful 12-15 step install process. The process is designed to make users quit before getting to the end and it sucks. That said it’s not going to stop us moving forward. We’re leading with our games now to pull through as many Epic Games Store mobile installs as possible prior to welcoming third party games to EGS in Q4. After players are pulled through the install friction getting additional apps is familiar 1-2 step install process for players and we want to set up our third party partners for success. It’s a shame things are this way - but - onward. It starts today. Lots of great coverage released today Dean/Venturebeat did a very thorough piece I’m sharing below. #mobilegaming #fortnite #ios #android #epicgames
