A new report from Synonym and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) has analyzed opportunities that would enable the sector to deliver bioproducts economically for mass adoption and in the process, create a rich asset class for real estate investors. Chief amongst these is the development of biofoundries: large standardized fermentation facilities that offer the economies of scale to break the cost inertia currently facing the sector. “Synthetic biology promises, to paraphrase the old slogan, better living – better stuff – through biology,” commented Joshua Lachter, Synonym Co-founder. “Synonym imagines a world where these products are ubiquitous in our daily lives, and this report examines how that potential can translate to the realities of industrial production." “Our findings offer fascinating clarity on the pathway to non-pharma commercial biomanufacturing in the short term,” says Jean-Francois Bobier, Partner, Deep Tech, at the Boston Consulting Group and a lead author of the report. “While our figures appear conservative compared to some analyses, the biofoundry model detailed by Synonym offers a clear route primed for robust investment immediately.” #foodtech #biomanufacturing #bioproducts

Together with Marco Castelnovo , we had the honour of representing ROELMI HPC - Società benefit at the International Forum on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioeconomy in Bologna, Italy, maintaining our commitment to sustainability and the development of upcycled ingredients. Amazing event where key topics for the future of the industry were discussed, such as the transition of biotechnological processes to the industrial level. One of the most relevant points was the importance of collaboration between startups and large companies in scaling up ideas and paving the way for industrial manufacturing. Still, while most agree that momentum here is pivotal for the success of the manufacturing industry, biosolutions is facing a series of challenges, all with the potential to halt the development and desired results within this area. As engineering consultancies, we can support the progress within biotechnology and biomanufacturing – and we believe that we have an obvious responsibility to do so🤝 By leveraging the value of partnerships, synergies, and cooperation with relevant biosolutions players, we can help create a new “neural network” of connections and workstreams that can assist industries in scaling-up on sustainable solutions for their manufacturing lines. Using our extensive experience within life science, food, and biosolutions, we can help our clients scale up their processes and design full-scale, quality plants. Willingness to make investments, extending the use of AI, and strengthening of biotech-related skills across sectors are crucial, however setting a collective goal for the implementation of biolsolutions is first and foremost done through fostering engagement and international cooperation. At NIRAS, we’re scaling up in our capabilities to support the biosolutions journey for manufacturers across especially the food & beverage and life science industries – and we’re growing our international symbioses to support the European Commission’s work on creating a future of biotechnology and biomanufacturing ♻🌍
