Few days ago, I attended the Changemakers Awards event organised by De Tijd & L'Echo. There, Bertrand Piccard shared a fascinating insight that really struck me : "Fish don’t know they are in water."  This metaphor highlights how we often overlook our surroundings because they're all we've ever experienced. It struck me because it immediatley helps me understand why it is so difficult for many of us to take real action for the long-term well-being of everyone on this planet and stop fighting to preserve the current system. We know what we need to do and we do have the solutions, but somehow we don’t see the necessity nor the massive (business) opportunities, which was also what Dame Ellen MacArthur echoed at the Changemakers Award launch event in November. However, very much like a fish unaware of the water it swims in, we may not see the systems shaping our lives until we step outside of them. Even if solutions are within reach, progress remains out of grasp without the willingness to challenge the status quo and explore beyond our immediate environment. So we need more changemakers to drive the transformation, leaders to support them and storytellers to craft the compelling narratives to help us to imagine this new future. If you want to drive a culture of growth mindset, start by showing that you can learn from your most critical feedback. Yesterday I got to see Adam Grant at the Nordic Business Forum in Helsinki. In my world, Adam is a bit of a superstar and he seriously did not disappoint. His talk was packed full of research-backed insights. One to share here: While working with the Gates Foundation, inspired by the “Mean Tweets” from Jimmy Kimmel Live, Adam asked Melinda Gates if they might try something similar - for the executive team to read out the roughest critical feedback that they have received on camera and respond to it. Melinda decided to go first. To test the impact of her presentation, Adam randomly assigned one group of employees to watch Melinda engage with the tough comments, a second to watch a video of her talking about the culture she wanted to create in more general terms, and a third to serve as a pure control group. The first group came away with the strongest growth mindsets — they were inspired to recognize their shortcomings and work to overcome them. Psychological safety is crucial for allowing board members to express concerns without fear of negative consequences, fostering a climate of mutual respect and trust. INSEAD Professor Stanislav Shekshnia highlighted that fostering psychological safety is a #collectiveeffort that requires #Chairs to play a #proactive role. This includes setting up an inclusive environment from the start, role-modeling open communication, ensuring fair board processes, and promoting a culture where psychological safety is a priority. The event featured insights from experienced Chairs like Nicholas Allen, Katarina G Bonde and Rolf Pfeiffer (he/him), who emphasized the importance of nurturing #curiosity, ensuring #safespaces for discussion on impactful topics such as AI and sustainability, and #training on new subjects to keep board members informed and engaged. What impact should a business focus on? The impact on the bottom line or the real, authentic, social impact they can make as an organisation? Does it have to be one or the other? When social impact and commercial interests compete instead of compliment, impact strategies struggle to move to action and progress is very tokenistic. Change the language, make it about opportunity, embed it into the core business strategy, and profit and purpose can both be delivered and compliment each other. Danone are a good example. Through its "One Planet, One Health" vision, Danone commits to sustainable sourcing, reducing its carbon footprint, and promoting healthier eating habits. It focuses on their right to play in this space and has differentiated Danone in a crowded food industry, attracting consumers who prioritise health and sustainability in their purchasing decisions.
