The AI community is buzzing with recent events and upcoming opportunities that are too exciting to miss. Here’s a roundup of some noteworthy developments. Firstly, the PyTorch Conference 2024 was a remarkable event that brought together industry leaders, researchers, and enthusiasts under one roof. A significant highlight was the inaugural Startup Showcase, where emerging AI/ML startups pitched their innovative solutions to venture capitalists. This platform not only fostered innovation but also provided these startups with visibility and potential investment opportunities. The conference also featured awards for outstanding contributions, such as the Best Poster Presentation awarded to Keyu Sun, Wei Sun & Sreen Tallam for their work on "PyTorch Performance Debugging in N-Dimensional Parallelism." These recognitions underscore the importance of open-source contributions in advancing machine learning techniques. In other news, the Journal of Machine Learning Research (JMLR) is inviting authors who published papers in 2023 or later to present at NeurIPS 2024. This invitation offers a fantastic opportunity for researchers to share their findings with a broader audience. Authors have until September 27th to submit their requests for the Journal-to-Conference track. This initiative highlights the continuous efforts within the research community to disseminate knowledge and foster collaboration across different domains. Looking ahead, mark your calendars for TensorRT LLM night in San Francisco and the PyTorch Conference 2025 scheduled for October 22-23. These events promise enlightening experiences filled with keynotes, panels, and networking opportunities. I did not know just how huge #SFTechWeek (Oct 7-13, hundreds of events) is til I looked at the week's calendar for the below should-be-interesting event organized by the British Consulate-General in SF. Happy to host (at GitHub) and share some thoughts! However, after wondering at the scale of SF Tech Week, my brain resets a bit, and wonders: is this just another week in SF? A mild outlier perhaps. There are surely dozens of AI events on a typical SF week; GitHub often hosts a few of them. Then, my brain goes to: how does a distributed event week with hundreds of events compare to the scale of a huge centralized event (like Dreamforce, happening this week)? I'd guess the latter is much bigger in many respects, such as out of town draw, and could even have a halo of unofficial side events on scale of a distributed week (I'm totally unfamiliar with Dreamforce, it's just now; take instead RSA, I know it has many side events, some of which I attend). I'd be curious to see wild guesstimates in any case.
AI presents so many opportunities to grow our economies, create new businesses, and improve peoples' lives. How can we accelerate the use of AI for good? This #SFTechWeek, join the UK Director for International Technology Chris Jones, President of Carnegie Endowment for International Peace Mariano-Florentino (Tino) Cuéllar, Director of AI & Society at Ai2 Nicole DeCario, and VP of Developer Policy at GitHub Mike Linksvayer as we explore how we can maximise those opportunities as a global community -- while mitigating the risks.
