Peace and climate change are intertwined which is why at COP29 Azerbaijan, taking place this year from the 11-22 November in Baku, we have a shared opportunity and obligation to raise awareness about the importance of peace and conflict sensitivity in climate change negotiations. On 23 October at 14:00 CET, join the Peace@COP29 community for an important webinar to launch the latest policy paper "Navigating the peace and security implications of climate change: Recommendations on the climate-conflict nexus at COP29". This paper presents the latest insights and recommendations for involving peace in climate action Peace@COP29 is a global participatory collective of over 200 individuals from more than 80 institutions across five continents, of which Initiatives of Change is a member, all dedicated to integrating peace responsiveness and conflict sensitivity into climate change policy. This newest policy paper, tackles eight core environmental, climate change, conflict and peace issues, providing actionable recommendations that key decision-makers can enact or demand within the UNFCCC negotiations at COP29. The UNFCCC's (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) CoP 29 (Conference of Parties) in Azerbaijan's capital Baku has assumed much significance as it is expected to provide guidelines for financing climate action. But challenges remain. While developed countries agreed at the COP held in Copenhagen in 2009 to mobilize $100 billion every year by 2020 to help developing countries address climate-related challenges, they managed to deliver on the promise partially, that too by 2022, even as the financial burden of the Global South, comprising poor and developing nations such as India and China, has exponentially increased. There has been unanimity among both developed and developing nations about the need for a robust funding mechanism and the amount of money needed to mitigate the negative repercussions of climate change and protect the most vulnerable. However, consensus seems to elude the questions of who will bear the costs and by how much. Intransigence of developed nations on climate finance cannot be allowed to persist considering its potential role in weakening the global community's fight against climate change.

Qaiser NAWAB, President of BRISD, lauded China’s leadership in climate action during the closing ceremony of the China Pavilion at COP29. He highlighted the pavilion’s role as a hub for innovation, meaningful dialogue, and global collaboration, commending its commitment to sustainability. Stressing the importance of unity, he called for continued international partnerships to tackle the climate crisis. “Together, we can achieve a brighter future for our planet,” he concluded. Excited to Share My Latest Achievement! 🌍 I’m thrilled to announce that I have successfully completed the International Climate Policy and Advocacy course focused on COP29! This comprehensive course has deepened my understanding of global climate negotiations and the vital role of youth in shaping our future. Here are some key areas I explored: UNFCCC Process: Gained insights into the goals, structure, history, and international climate agreements of the UNFCCC. COP and COY: Learned about the components and functions of COP, the organization and participants, the discussions at COP, its significance, successes, and the distinctions between the Blue and Green Zones. Major Negotiation Themes: Explored key topics such as ACE, climate adaptation, loss and damage, climate finance, technology, green skills, just transition, and the critical role of youth negotiators. Climate Change in World Regions: Delved into regional climate challenges, with a particular focus on Africa. COP29 Daily Themes: Prepared for the dynamic discussions and themes of COP29. This course has equipped me with valuable knowledge and skills to contribute effectively to climate policy and advocacy. I look forward to applying these insights in my ongoing work and future initiatives. 🌍 As we are halfway through COP-29 in Azerbaijan, the 60th session of the Subsidiary Bodies (SBs) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is currently taking place in Bonn, Germany, from June 3 to 13, 2024. Known as the Bonn Climate Conference, this session aims to build on the outcomes of COP28, particularly the first Global Stocktake, and help countries develop a shared understanding of effective nationally determined contributions (NDCs). It is pivotal for nations to demonstrate leadership and commitment to climate action. This conference is a crucial milestone on the road to COP29, offering a space to build confidence that the post-2025 finance goal will be successfully agreed upon by the end of the year. The conference provides multiple opportunities for participants to show their dedication to accelerating action and enhancing international cooperation. Summary of Day 3, COP29 in Baku Day three of COP29 saw critical progress across global climate initiatives, with a strong focus on advancing climate finance, supporting Small Island Developing States (SIDS), integrating health into climate agendas, and enhancing early warning systems for resilience. Key Highlights from Day 3 at COP29: 💰 New Climate Finance Goal: The New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) draft was introduced, taking a pivotal step in defining global climate finance goals. ✒ Support for SIDS: The Baku Declaration emphasized the importance of amplifying SIDS’ voices in climate discussions and securing strong financial backing for their needs. 📰 Future Pathways for Climate Action: The COP Presidencies Troika set strategic priorities, ensuring a cohesive climate policy roadmap leading up to COP30. ⚠ Early Warning Systems: The Early Warnings for All (EW4All) initiative saw progress, underscoring a commitment to protect communities from extreme climate events by 2027. 💊 Health and Climate: Health took a central role, with discussions on embedding health impacts and solutions into future climate action. The day also marked the conclusion of the two-day World Leaders Climate Action Summit, attended by over 80 heads of state and government officials. Leaders reaffirmed their commitments to the Paris Agreement and outlined national climate goals. 🚀 Excited to be supporting the Water Unite team in it's coverage of COP29 Azerbaijan. This year, climate-finance takes centre stage at the summit, with negotiations for a 'New Collective Quantified Goal' on Climate Finance (NCQG) at the top of the agenda. Whilst COP15's previous target of USD $100 billion annually by 2020 was a step in the right direction, it has become clear that it represents only a fraction of the funds needed to support a truly global & equitable Green Transition. In fact, even with strong growth in domestic funding, at least $1 trillion in international climate-financing for low and middle-income countries (excluding China) will be needed annually by 2030. An agreement on a new NCQG will also be key in ensuring trust in the Paris Agreement, which is particularly important given the deadline for Nationally Determined Contribution submissions (NDCs) next year. I am also energised to see the increased recognition of the importance of water in global climate discussions. Building on key milestones from previous years, such as the focus on water and sanitation within the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA), COP29 aims to create a consistent long-term platform for high level discussions via the 'Baku Dialogue on Water for Climate Action'. The Dialogue will be essential in cementing the importance of water-related climate mitigation and adaptation solutions as we move into an uncertain new era of climate policy. Today marked the beginning of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29 Azerbaijan) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC UN), which is being held in Baku, Azerbaijan. ⏰ Running from the 11th to the 22nd of November, COP29 represents an opportunity for the world to come together and address the climate crisis, with world leaders and negotiators from UNFCCC member states collaborating with business leaders, young people, climate scientists and Indigenous Peoples to advance solutions for the climate crisis in a truly collective and inclusive way. 🚀 The key focus of this year will be negotiating a new approach to climate finance. A ‘New Collective Quantified Goal’ (NCQG) will be discussed, replacing the previous collective annual target of USD $100 billion mobilised by industrialised countries to support global climate mitigation and adaptation strategies. Importantly these negotiations will examine the equality of accessing finance, ensuring that every region has fair access to vital climate and adaptation finance. 💧 COP29 also places water higher on the global climate agenda, which is essential given the integral role freshwater management plays in climate adaptation. The highly anticipated ‘Baku Dialogue on Water for Climate Action’, to be announced during the second week of COP29, will call upon stakeholders to integrate water-related mitigation and adaptation measures with climate policy, including Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptation Plans (NAPs). I find the developments surrounding the COP29 climate deal and the reactions from developing nations and NGOs quite telling of the complexities we face in addressing global climate change. It’s evident that while ambitious targets are essential, the mechanisms for implementation and the equitable distribution of resources are just as crucial. The rejection of the deal by developing nations underscores a significant concern: the need for a more inclusive approach that genuinely addresses the unique challenges these countries face. Many developing nations are on the front lines of climate change, yet they often lack the financial and technological resources to adapt and mitigate its impacts. This disparity highlights the importance of not only setting ambitious climate goals but also ensuring that support mechanisms—such as funding, technology transfer, and capacity building—are in place to assist those most affected. Furthermore, the role of NGOs in this conversation cannot be understated..
