My Google alert just went off reminding me about this lovely chat I had with Martin Cooper MBCS of BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT. Those working at BCS might be scratching their heads, and thinking “don’t I know her?”. Well, yes, you do. Before I found my way into cyber, you’d find me marketing the flip out of anything end-user related for that BCS place! If you’re looking for a darn good read, why not take a look at https://lnkd.in/euCveA7c and remember to add the practical advice to your Monday to do list.

Do you give your team cyber security training? You really should. It’s one of the most powerful ways to protect your business from being breached. The more up to date your people are on the latest scams, the greater the protection. But the way you train your people can have a big impact on how much they take in. And if you’re still just training them once a year with a boring course, that’s not enough. There’s a better way. My latest tech update talks about the most effective way to train your team and protect your business. Why are insider threats among the top cybersecurity risks? According to Verizon’s 2024 Data Breach Investigations Report, 68% of all breaches are caused by the human factor. The primary reason: A lack of or weak cybersecurity awareness training practices for employees with access to sensitive data, which leads to carelessness and accidental errors. These errors could lead to a breach, which could lead to thousands, if not millions, of dollars in losses. I've sat through these trainings that organizations provide for their employees, and I'm talking about organizations of all sizes - from Fortune 500 companies to startups. It's always an online training course, and they're always booorr-ring! 😴 😴 No wonder many employees tune out and create a breach. Your little test at the end of each module? They're cute but easily passable for even the most tuned-out student. Here's what I've learned as an instructor: Adults learn differently. We all have different learning styles. Some are visual learners, and others are kinesthetic, while some may be auditory learners and others more interpersonal. Some learn from reading, others from charts and graphs, and still others from social interaction. I incorporate all of these into every class, whether it's a 90-minute class or a 2-day workshop. Personally, I am more of a linguistic and auditory learner. I learn more from reading and Podcasts, than watching an online video or taking an online course. Of course, I can't be an effective firearms instructor without kinesthetic learning, and neither can my students. Shooting is literally hands-on. Real-life analogies are also a big part of my teaching. I can give students the technical instruction, but it's really when they get something that's personally relatable is when it clicks. So, if you are responsible for your organization's cybersecurity awareness and training, it might be time to step up your game. Don't just offer a one-and-done online course. Do live bi-annual or even quarterly trainings. Make them interactive for the interpersonal learners, hands-on for the kinesthetic learners, have great speakers for the auditory learners, and provide excellent written materials for the linguistic learners. Training your diverse staff in a way that each individual staff member gets it will no doubt reduce insider threats and bolster your cyber security posture.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is transforming the way we think about technology education within our organization, including the realm of cybersecurity. Let's face it, cybersecurity training might not always be the highlight of our busy schedules, but it's crucial for safeguarding our digital and physical workspaces. This week, I had the fantastic opportunity to collaborate with some of our brilliant subject matter experts to create an engaging, fun-filled learning experience for our employees. We ditched the standard presentations and introduced camp-style games like 'Catching Phish,' 'I Spy,' 'Hide & Seek,' and more. These activities not only made learning about email security, spotting security risks, responsible AI use, and security trivia enjoyable but also memorable. The highlight of my day? Hearing the buzz of excited conversations throughout the building as employees shared what they'd learned. It's moments like these that remind me why I love what I do: making education both accessible and enjoyable. Let's continue to innovate and make learning an experience to look forward to! 🚀 #Cybersecurity #TechEducation #EmployeeEngagement #InnovativeLearning #TeamLoves #LoveWhatYouDo

🔐 Cybersecurity: Demystifying the Field for Aspiring Young Minds 🔐 When young professionals consider a career in cybersecurity, they often have a certain image in mind—hackers in hoodies, high-stakes digital battles, and constant adrenaline rushes. But the reality is far more nuanced and diverse. 1. Beyond the Hacker Stereotype: Myth: Cybersecurity is all about hacking into systems and breaking codes. Reality: While ethical hacking is a part of the field, cybersecurity encompasses a wide range of roles including risk management, policy development, incident response, forensic analysis, and more. It’s about building and maintaining secure systems as much as it is about finding vulnerabilities. 🌟🔧 2. The Importance of Fundamentals: Myth: Mastering cybersecurity tools and software is all you need. Reality: Tools are just one part of the equation. Understanding the fundamental principles of cybersecurity is crucial. This foundational knowledge allows professionals to adapt to new tools and emerging threats effectively. 📚🛠️ 3. Continuous Evolution: Myth: Once you’re certified, you’re set for life. Reality: Cybersecurity is a constantly evolving field. Certifications are just the beginning; staying updated through ongoing education, industry conferences, and hands-on experience is key to staying relevant. 📈🎓 4. The Value of Soft Skills: Myth: Technical skills are all that matter. Reality: Communication, critical thinking, and teamwork are crucial in cybersecurity. Explaining complex technical issues to non-technical stakeholders, working collaboratively with diverse teams, and making quick, informed decisions under pressure are all part of the job. 🗣️🤝 5. Prevention Over Reaction: Myth: Cybersecurity is always about responding to incidents. Reality: While incident response is vital, much of cybersecurity work involves prevention. This includes developing security policies, conducting risk assessments, and implementing proactive measures to safeguard systems. Preventing an attack can be as rewarding as responding to one. 🛡️🚀 6. Ethical Responsibility: Myth: Cybersecurity is a game of outsmarting others. Reality: Cybersecurity professionals have a responsibility to protect data and systems ethically. This means adhering to laws, regulations, and ethical standards, and always prioritizing the safety and privacy of users. It’s about being a guardian of the digital realm. 🌐⚖️ Final Thoughts: Cybersecurity is a dynamic and fulfilling field with endless opportunities for growth and impact. By understanding the true nature of the profession, young minds can better navigate their career paths and contribute meaningfully to the protection of our digital world. I thought I would share a little story which relates to how we can all take responsibility for good cyber hygiene. Are you aware of the risks associated with information security incidents? My recent experience at my son's after-school football match made me realise the importance of cyber security awareness training for everyone, not just those in the IT and tech fields but at all levels of society. An email containing sensitive information was inadvertently sent to all parents on the team list, exposing their personal data. The school reacted quickly, but it got me thinking could all of this have been easily avoided if proper cyber awareness training for all staff was in place? I’m sure we would all agree the answer is yes. We all handle data in our everyday lives, and it's crucial for all staff, including those on the frontline with customers, students, and patients, to understand the risks and implications. Employers need to make sure their staff are equipped with enough knowledge to help reduce information security breaches and mitigate cyber security risk. At CertNexus, we offer CyberSAFE 410, a half-day vendor neutral e-learning course, that introduces team members and leaders, whether in technical positions or not, to some of the risks and pitfalls they may face and helps demonstrate how to best avoid and respond to them. This is a foundation level course so you are not required to be a cyber security expert to take it. Are you ready to take the CyberSAFE exam? Try our free readiness test here: https://lnkd.in/ePaKH6U2. CyberSAFE is important to virtually any job, and finding a provider and class is easy with Cert Nexus' authorized training partners: https://lnkd.in/eeFS34hR. Let's all take responsibility and prioritize cyber security awareness training to keep our data, inboxes, staff, customers, and families safe. Being cyber safe and taking training should not be exclusive to just IT, tech and cyber professionals but it should be the responsibility of everyone if we want to reduce risk and prevent our data falling into the wrong hands.
