Storytelling is the most powerful tool humans have to connect with each other. As long as humans can tell relatable stories, empathy will do the rest. Great example of marketing from Volvo Cars here (you HAVE to watch it all!), that did a great job at telling a story, instead of selling a product. Don't sell the object, sell something that humans can relate to. (and I am not surprised to learn that Hoyte Van Hoytema is behind this piece of art!) Volvo Cars posted a long-form ad on Instagram & YouTube, produced by the cinematographer of Interstellar and Oppenheimer. It definitely leans into everything we already think of Volvo (safety) --but takes storytelling to a new level hitting on human emotions that connect to consumers. However, the reactions & comments are truly telling and one that another car manufacturer could learn from. Sure this campaign might get blown away in impressions compared to other brands, but Volvo is actually getting social reactions of people saying they will buy a Volvo either now or for their next car. Quality content and storytelling that hits your target audience to create an action. Great example. Just a great example of a brand that knows who they are and how they can connect with customers.

I recently read that the average attention span on *any screen* has declined from 2.5 minutes in 2004 to just 47 seconds. Clocking in at just under 4 minutes, the #VolvoCommerical for the newEX90 is an absolute masterpiece. In an age of ephemeral, well, EVERYTHING, this spot is perhaps the best example of a brand articulating its values (and value) I've seen on a screen in a very long time. Why? Because it's got soul. And it's got direction from masterful visual storyteller Hoyte Van Hoytema. Emotional depth? Depth of narrative? The courage to bet on storytelling and defy what is (to me, at least) a heartbreaking downward trend in our capacity to engage with anything for long enough to feel something? I can't stop thinking about this Instagram reel! 3:45 minutes of ingenious storytelling and remarkable brand application, perfectly crafted for full-screen viewing on my phone. This video hits so close to home for me right now. Sharing it with family and friends, I’ve also seen how deeply it resonates emotionally with others. Volvo already had me convinced about their hybrid and electric cars in the last year through their Volvo On Demand service (RIP)—essentially paid test drives. But this video goes beyond product features, creating a connection on a completely different level. In a world where younger audiences scroll the equivalent of 25 kilometers daily and attention spans continue to shrink, the general recommendation is that shorter content is the key to success. Without even seeing the metrics, I'd bet the average view time of this post is outperforming every benchmark. I wouldn't be surprised if people, like me, watched it multiple times and felt compelled to spread the word and share it with their close circles. Kudos to Volvo Cars and the people involved.
