Artificial Intelligence (AI) promises to revolutionize how healthcare organizations serve patients but harnessing this technology to design better services is fraught with unknowns and confounders. This is particularly true at academic medical centers, where orchestrating care is complex.
To help leaders and clinicians at academic medical centers consider, develop and roll out AI-enabled services, our very own James J. Ress, MBA and Sara Edwards propose a blueprint for ‘Care-Centred AI’ (CCAI) in Service Design Network's latest edition of Touchpoint Vol 15 No. 1, "Service Design at the Dawn of AI". As James and Sara partnered on this, they both pulled from their respective experiences, ideating around how AI can augment the patient-caregiver paradigm while remaining human-centered without disrupting workflows across care pathways.

Generative AI is transforming the healthcare industry with its ability to analyze vast datasets and generate new insights. Personalizing patient care can tailor treatments to individual genetic profiles, lifestyle factors, and health histories, leading to significantly improved outcomes. Medical research accelerates the discovery of new treatments by predicting how different drugs interact with various diseases.
Generative AI can also revolutionize drug discovery by simulating the effects of compounds on biological systems, reducing the need for costly and time-consuming laboratory experiments. This technology not only streamlines the development process but also opens up possibilities for finding cures for currently considered untreatable diseases.
The integration of Generative AI into healthcare promises to enhance patient care, expedite medical research, and innovate drug discovery, making it a pivotal tool in advancing global health. The potential for personalized treatments, improved outcomes, and finding cures for diseases is immense. The future of healthcare is bright with Generative AI. #GenerativeAI#Healthcare#MedicalResearch#DrugDiscovery#PersonalizedMedicine#GlobalHealth
Many of us have had our perceptions of AI shaped by the robotic protagonists—and more often, antagonists—of science fiction. From Terminator to Westworld, AI has been portrayed as a harbinger of doom, a dark force seemingly bent on humanity’s destruction. This portrayal has proven difficult to shake off, especially in the field of medicine where the latest AI tools are now outperforming healthcare professionals in various clinical tasks.
In this episode, Jonathan Fisher, MD FACC, Robert Pearl, M.D. and Jeremy Corr cut through the noise to focus on the facts, helping listeners understand what AI can currently achieve, its potential in the near future, and the critical issues to monitor as this technology continues to evolve rapidly.

This week, I had the pleasure of joining Jonathan Fisher, MD FACC and Jeremy Corr on the Fixing Healthcare podcast. Our discussion ventured deep into the transformative role of AI in medicine—a theme central to my new book, "ChatGPT, MD."
In "ChatGPT, MD," I explore how generative AI can empower doctors and patients, helping them reclaim control of American healthcare. This vision aligns closely with the insights from Dr. Fisher's new release, "Just One Heart," where he bridges the gap between Western science and Eastern wisdom to enhance holistic health and vitality.
While my focus is on how AI can augment medical practice, Dr. Fisher emphasizes the heart's role in personal and professional wellness—two perspectives that are crucial in the evolving landscape of healthcare.
In our podcast, we discuss the current applications of AI in the medical field, celebrate early successes, and confront the challenges of a technology still in its infancy of widespread adoption. As 40% of doctors now feel comfortable using AI for clinical and administrative tasks, it's crucial to address the concerns many patients have about the potential over-reliance on technology in their care.
Dr. Fisher's book and mine, although focusing on different aspects of healthcare, both highlight the need for a balanced approach that incorporates advanced technology without losing the human touch that is so vital to effective medicine.
Discover how we can use these tools to not just treat patients, but to connect with what truly matters in our professional and personal lives.
I’m eager to hear your thoughts: How do you see AI and holistic approaches like those proposed by Dr. Fisher transforming healthcare? What balance should we strive for in integrating these innovations?
