The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) is a highly sought-after destination for many aspiring students in India, necessitating success in the IIT JEE exams for admission. Here are the top observations from the tables of JEE #1 rankers from 1980 to 2024: 1.    Most Common IIT: IIT Bombay had the highest number of JEE #1 rankers, with 15 out of 45 top rankers choosing this institution. 2.    Gender Aggregate: Male dominance is evident, with all 45 top rankers being male. There is a significant gender gap among JEE #1 rankers. 3.    State of Birth Aggregate: Maharashtra produced the most JEE #1 rankers, with 10 top rankers born in this state. Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh also contributed significantly, with 6 and 5 top rankers respectively. 4.    Department Preference: The majority of top rankers chose Computer Science, indicating its popularity and perceived value among the highest achievers. 5.    Current Status and Institutions: Many rankers pursued further education or held positions in prestigious institutions like MIT, Stanford University, ETH Zurich, and Carnegie Mellon University. 6.    Several rankers became entrepreneurs or senior executives in major tech firms and startups. 7.    Top Rankers at MIT: MIT attracted several top rankers for undergraduate or postgraduate studies, emphasizing its global appeal. 8.    Career Paths: A significant number of rankers went into academia and research, contributing to fields such as AI, quantum computing, and theoretical physics. 9.    Entrepreneurial Success: Many rankers founded or held leading roles in successful startups, especially in the tech and AI sectors. Not wading into controversy but taking it at face value, disappointed that only 1.6% of IIT Bombay students are opting to create their own startup :( This is based on stats released by Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay on placement preferences. We are talking here about one of the best institutes of India where there will be no dearth of resources be it alumni, infra, location etc. I wish this number hovered atleast around 5%. And if the institute of this repute is not able to get students to take risks, I think somewhere I will blame the institute to not doing enough to get students to break away from traditional career paths. If not their own innovation, institutes can atleast take cues from the likes of Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani Thoughts? SIBM CONVERTED. But it has a story ahead. It was January 10, 2024 when SNAP results were declared and I managed to secure just 84 percentile. I lost hope for one of the prestigious group of institutions. But on January 16, I received a mail that I have been selected for further rounds of SIBM Pune. Being excited and confused simultaneously, I checked the portal for confirmation. I ascertained that I qualified for further rounds of SIBM Pune Innovation and Entrepreneurship program; a program which is exclusively for entrepreneurship aspirants and has NO PLACEMENTS. People with percentile as low as 60 also get a chance for this program. This was an experimental opportunity for me. Inspite of lacking relevant knowledge about entrepreneurship, I still appeared for the further rounds. I prepared a business idea and researched about it incase they asked me about it anourse, prepared for GD and other interview questions. I was surprised to learn that I secured a seat in SIBM Pune's IE program in the FIRST MERIT LIST. Almost 350 to 400 people interviewed for just 60 SEATS. The lesson I got through this experience is that never let go of any opportunity no matter how clueless you are.
