EP 132: “Hops and Hardships” – Mike & Blaine by Blaine Bertsch It was a good run. After almost two decades of growth and an explosion of crazy-good flavors, the craft brewing business is in decline. How could that be? You would think the beer snobs would revolt or come to their favorite brewers' rescue, but that hasn’t happened yet. In this episode, Mike and Blaine speak […] #boomers #babyboomers

Of all the terms thrown about by brewers of traditional continental lagers, decoction is probably the least understood. Find out just exactly what decoction is on this episode of Brewing for Dummies: Decoction. https://lnkd.in/dJ6ud8hH

Becca and I stopped by the local drive-in and got a root beer float the other day. I always take home some root beer by itself when we go. You can see the product in this video. B & K Root Beer Stand is one of those old school drive-in, eat in your car type places from the 50’s and 60’s. When your product and your brand are so good and so old, You can sell your it in clear plastic milk jugs, And people still know what it is. B&K has been in business for 85 years. This is an amazing accomplishment for ANY businesss. Average age of a Fortune 500 company? 15 years. That’s an amazing figure to me. That means there are things I can learn from a business like B&K that I can’t learn from one of the big companies. IMHO, the first place to start is the product. It’s the best root beer I’ve ever tasted, and that fact has kept me coming back my entire life. Literally. When Becca and I bought this house, one of the deciding factors was its proximity to our B&K Rootbeer Stand. No joke. It wasn’t the most important thing, but it was a deciding factor. It’s a e-bicycle ride away now! I can’t believe my good fortune. #StayinAliveWithRootbeer 🫚🍺 Music by: The Bee Gee’s, “Stayin’ Alive”

Do you skew international or domestic if and when you drink beer? If the latter, did you celebrate #AmericanBeer 🇺🇸🍺Day? No worries if not — it fell on a Sunday this year (10/27) so that means you have all week 😆 (✨🍻✨ 👈🏾 that's what I call a #BeerCheers -- which you'll see us do in this video too... ) Now that you've got plenty of time to celebrate it, check out this highlight vid I shared from my “Savory & Sweet Show” vault re: the value of serving up and providing hidden beer history for a client— via a 2022 harvest season convo with Kim Harris, co-owner of Harlem Hops .. + Below is the link to my 2024 #AmericanBeerDay blogpost that sheds a little light on the surprising underpinnings of our nation's thriving beer industry. It's intended to serve as inclusively empowering intel for future beer-based entrepreneurs of all hues (albeit potentially "controversial" or even contested -- especially these days depending on what one imagines the profile or Avatar of the “#averageAmerican #beerdrinker” is, always was, or 'should be')… I’d love to know whether what’s in this brief blogpost (and any of the other TFG beer posts I wrote that it links to) is new information to you or if it’s familiar in any way (i.e, you’ve heard it or perhaps bits of it before -- along with your comments or q’s — including ways you think info like this either could or wouldn’t ever possibly impact beer businesses & the industry at large. I’ll stay tuned … 👁️👉🏽 https://lnkd.in/eKAxJExE

After a 16 year long journey of entirely self-directed and self-funded research exploring the 1840s-1940s history of the American lager brewing industry, the milestone of publishing is no longer a personal dream, but a retirement reality. Per earlier posts, the remarkable, surprising and inspiring legacies of those first generations of lager brewers in the United States is brought to life in the five volume series titled The Inspiring History and Legacies of American Lager Beer. Overwhelmingly a history told in their words, not the author's, the series first two volumes, The Beer of Myths & Legacies Denied: 1941-1948 and The Beer of War and Global Famine Relief: 1941-1948, both have firm release dates of August, 2024 and January, 2025, respectively. Published by the Master Brewers Association of the Americas (MBAA) as 11 x 8.5 inch hardcover books ranging from 200-400 pages in length, the generous contributions of a wide array of financial sponsors - comprised exclusively of craft brewers, retiree and allied industry donors - has enabled setting a lower price point than typically associated with books of this format and size. Additionally, requesting author royalties be capped at $1/per book sold has likewise contributed in this regard (with 100% of these dollars over the years ahead being donated in support of TAPS.org). Per the attachment, pre-release copies of Volume 1 can be ordered on line for $99. As I cannot figure out how to simultaneously provide the pertinent link and attachment in the same post, specifics as to the former - as well as a chapter by chapter synopsis of Volume 1 - will follow in subsequent posts. To conclude, per the nine-page long Acknowledgements section found at the end of each volume, I hope readers will themselves come to discover how the trifecta of our 'national beverage' since the 1890s (adjunct lager beer), the world's dominant contemporary style of beer (also adjunct lager beer!) and the very existence of the series are all manifestations of our nation's motto: E Pluribus unum - "Out of many, one."

Beer has a very long, rich history with humans. And the roots of brewing span several thousands of years. What's really interesting to learn is that beer has never just been a man's world (despite being a very male-dominated industry today). Check out this incredible story of beer and trailblazing female brewers: https://hubs.la/Q02mHQlR0
