Excited to share that my team’s hackathon prototype with Signly got an award. This work was all about meeting Deaf and other BSL users where they were and enabling them to have same access as everyone else.
If BSL is your primary means of communication then going through a call centre process just isn’t feasible. Unless you’ve got the right technology to bridge the gap between these groups and how businesses like to work. Without this, businesses exclude BSL users from being able to do all manner of things - including our use case, complaining!
The requirements for accessibility technology need to be dictated by the groups directly affected, especially if they are marginalised. This is made harder here as historically BSL users often have had more difficulties accessing technology. That’s why our solution was aimed at messaging services like WhatsApp. A tool BSL users know and are already using everyday.
BSL users have been campaigning for equal access for so long that many have forgotten when it started. This is just a small step on the road that shows BSL users don’t have to be left behind.
