New Post: ‘Dead By Daylight’ directors on eight years of terror: “We rolled the dice” - https://lnkd.in/gUHE-2q2 - Mathieu Côté, the director of eclectic horror game Dead By Daylight, has something to admit. “I’ve famously always been a wuss,” he tells NME, grinning sheepishly over Zoom. “I used to have nightmares about Jabba the Hutt.” Creative director Dave Richard, who’s also on the call, laughs mercilessly at Côté. It’s a surprising confession, given he works on one of the biggest horror games in the world. READ MORE: ‘Hooked On You: A Dead By Daylight Dating Sim’ review: fourth wall-breaking fun A competitive multiplayer game, Dead By Daylight pits four people (called survivors) against a fifth player (the killer) who must catch and slaughter them all. Its characters are a mix of original heroes and villains, and some of the biggest names in horror – think Chucky, Ghost Face, and Freddy Krueger – are included. Since launching in 2016, Dead By Daylight has found success after success, and is now played by over 60 million people. Keeping a game alive for eight years is no small feat, but its Canadian developer, Behaviour Interactive, hasn’t stopped there. It’s since released dating sim spin-off Hooked On You and announced a tie-in psychological horror game called The Casting Of Frank Stone, while a film adaptation with Insidious production studio Blumhouse is in the works. If managing all of this keeps Côté and Richard up at night, it doesn’t show. The pair are jovial, and often make each other laugh with cryptic inside jokes. Richard has worked at Behaviour for his entire career, while Côté was a bartender, sex shop manager and finally game animator before joining the Montreal studio in 2011. They’re an entertaining duo, but not necessarily the people you’d expect to find running one of the world’s biggest horror games. Mathieu Côté. Credit: Behaviour Interactive. The origins of Dead By Daylight are just as unlikely. “We had this horror setting with very complex AI,” says Richard. He’s referencing Naughty Bear, Behaviour’s 2010 action-adventure game about a murderous teddy bear. “At some point in Naughty Bear, our publisher 505 Games requested that we add a multiplayer mode. So we added four. One of them, Jelly Wars, was a game in which four players would play normal bears, and their goal was to find jellies and bring them into a giant mixer. Another person would play the Naughty Bear, trying to kill them.” “That’s the really basic, first iteration of what Dead By Daylight is,” Richard adds while Côté giggles at the mention of Jelly Wars. Still, the development team saw something special in it, and began working on a slasher game based on the premise. It started with a rough prototype – a barebones game of hide and seek because the killer couldn’t yet kill – but quickly too

I was given the opportunity to play with my favorite technologies and tools (MetaHumans and Unreal Engine) to create a full-length music video. I'm super grateful to Tal Tirangel, Roy Kafri, and Ori Shochat for their trust. Instead of sharing clean post-rendered shots from the video, I thought it would be funny to share the more chaotic side of the creation. Link to the full clip in the comments below <3

Interesting thought I had today, and this is where I see indie game dev going. "During the late '80s and early '90s, lo fidelity became not only a description of the recording quality of a particular album, but it also became a genre onto itself. Throughout rock & roll's history, recordings were made cheaply and quickly, often on substandard equipment." This is the impact AI is starting to have on game dev. Ignore the woes for a moment, and realize, AI is about to make game development cheaper and more accessible in a way it has never been. What do you think this will result in? How will gaming as a medium evolve? #lowfi #generativeai #gamingthoughts

How can we account for what is perhaps the most important purpose of our music in games? Let’s say I have one main track and three variations for a level where the player stays for a long time. If we are going to not bore players to death we need to come up with a good playback system for the tracks. Btw, you get bonus points if you know how many times I wrote “loop” in this post. So first, I'll make a Musical Playlist Container. (Wwise and its names, right?) This is where you put the tracks. In the container, I'll organize the tracks into groups and set the playback sequence. The whole sequence will loop infinitely. I'll set the main track to loop once, and jump to a subgroup that will randomly play one of the variations. I'll loop this subgroup twice and let Wwise loop it once more or once less before it restarts the sequence. It would be a shame if Wwise stopped there. So I'll set a shuffle random type in the subgroup with the variations. Now Wwise won't loop the same variation twice. What do you think? Are you still there? If you are share what other fun ways do you use to improve your musical sequences in Wwise? It'll be cool to share our knowledge.

🎰Today I want to talk about what makes Chinese Themed slot Games so different from musical perspective! 🎰 These games often use traditional Chinese musical instruments, creating a unique atmosphere and conveying the spirit of Eastern culture. Let's get to know these instruments better: 🎵 Guqin (古琴): This string instrument, also known as the Chinese zither, produces rich and melodic sounds that help create a vibe of tranquility and harmony. Its soft and gentle notes often play in the background, evoking a sense of peace and relaxation. 🎵 Dizi (笛子): The bamboo flute, dizi, is one of the most popular Chinese wind instruments. In slot games, the dizi is often used to create lively and cheerful melodies, adding dynamic to the gameplay. 🎵 Erhu (二胡): The erhu is a two-stringed bowed instrument, often referred to as the "Chinese violin." In the gaming world, the erhu adds drama and depth, helping players immerse themselves even more into the game's storyline. 🎵 Pipa (琵琶): This string instrument, has a four-stringed structure and plays an important role in traditional Chinese music. The pipa's sounds are bright and sharp, often accompanied by fast and technical passages. In slot games, the pipa adds touches of intrigue and exoticism. 🎵 Gong (锣) and 🎵 Drums (鼓): In slot games, these instruments are used to create tense moments, emphasize wins, and highlight bonus rounds. Here I want to attach the link for the China national orchestra for you to enjoy the beauties of the music with me. https://lnkd.in/e2phRagz Let’s try Chinese themed slot games and dive into the magic of the East! 🌸🀄️🎶

Let's turn that review, deep dive, spreadsheet extravaganza into a quest! Most of us have a beloved video game from the 80's, 90's, 00's, 10's, or 20's. Did you ever think about listening to the soundtrack while focusing on a task? The music from video games is meant to drive your focus on a task, utilize that same principle to listen to nostalgic music (calming or intense) from 30 years ago or last night. #FocusAtWork #GamersAtWork #CreativeProductivity #ProductivityTips

My current schedule has me waking up at 5am every day. I do it gladly. Half of it is my distributed team can only meet at 7am my time, which forces an early start. But I wake up much earlier than that to work on my #indie #gamedev project. Last update I had completed the #gameprogramming logic for gameplay "phases." This update I decided to build out some "easy" phases to test the functionality. The result is building out the logic for musical Instruments, to build generative music for the game. Specifically, I convert my Drums from a single kick, to a full kit: https://lnkd.in/gxFpsjut #indiedev #softwaredevelopment #gamedevelopment #gameplay #generativemusic #generativeai
