I’ve been scrolling through job descriptions for Social Media Manager roles lately, and I’m noticing a trend that’s low-key frustrating.
So, apparently, a Social Media Manager is now expected to be an SEO expert, a marketing strategist, an analytics pro, and a graphic designer... all in one.
Is it just me, or is this becoming a bit ridiculous?
👉 "Contribute to and influence the direction of social media strategy" – Cool, that’s part of the job, makes sense. But then we veer off into a sea of unrelated tasks i.e. improving SEO of all websites.
Last I checked, Social Media Management was about community building, engagement, content creation, and ACTUALLY MANAGING social media channels—not optimizing websites for Google search rankings!
Now don’t get me wrong—SEO is important.
But there’s an entire job for that. It’s called an SEO specialist.
Social Media Managers already wear enough hats without taking on tasks that belong to an entirely different role.
And sure, I love creating visuals using Canva (seriously, lifesaver), but if I wanted to be a full-time designer, I'd have signed up for that.
Asking social media managers to also be designers AND handle SEO just waters down the role and undervalues the actual skills and expertise needed to run killer social media campaigns.
We love what we do, but can we please stop expecting Social Media Managers to do everything?
Focus on what we’re here for: connecting with the audience, creating engaging content, and driving brand growth across social platforms. Let us use our skills where they count.
Let’s leave SEO to the SEO team and design to the designers!
Rant over.
